Activity Instructor - Film Making & Photography (PS 297)

The Activity Specialist (Photography/Videography) teaches and facilitates a youth-centered class tailored to their specific expertise. Candidates with the following expertise are encouraged to apply:

Reports To: Program Director, PS 297
Location: 700 Park Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11206
Hours: 8 - 10 hours / week; Non Exempt, September - June
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 2 pm - 6 pm
Salary: $19 / HR - $25

Major Duties:

  • Prepare and develop age, and skill-appropriate curriculum, lesson plans, activities, and special projects that fuse the arts and academic competencies to be reviewed by supervisors before being taught.
  • Teach students the fundamentals of photography and filmmaking, including camera operation, video editing, and techniques.
  • Develop and/or follow a sequenced Curriculum based on students’ interest. Curriculum should promote creativity, self-expression, opportunity for mastery, and emotional and professional growth.
  • Integrate lessons enriched with literacy, history and other related academic subjects when applicable.
  • Provide basic hands-on knowledge of camera and operation, both video and photography.
  • Ensure students will be prepared and able to illustrate what they learned in a culminating event.
  • Attend all staff meetings and staff development trainings sessions, as specified.
  • Foster a youth development, strength’s based environment, fostering a sense of belonging, safety, and community to participants.
  • Responsible for the setup, operation and clean-up of activities and the organization, inventory and storing of relevant supplies and equipment.
  • Guide program participants in examining choices, following directions and becoming involved in program activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Experience and/or training relevant to the position required.
  • Candidates with some college, experience with adolescents and teaching/coaching youth are encouraged to apply.
  • Flexibility, creativity, and enthusiasm for young people
  • Excellent planning, organization and time management skills
  • Ability to engage youth, while setting structure and limits in a group setting.
  • Energetic, motivated self-starter and a team player
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must have a commitment to work from a strength-based, youth and family development and trauma-informed perspective.
