Overview
The Media Coordinator will support the university's media relations, external messaging, and external experience management (XM) efforts. This person can expect to spend approximately 70% of their time supporting media relations efforts, approximately 20% supporting external XM efforts, and the remaining 10% supporting general external communications. This role is ideal for a proactive communicator who is passionate about storytelling, audience engagement, and reputation building. The successful candidate will help shape and share the university's voice with media and external audiences, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities and public sentiment.
Essential Functions
Media Relations
- Draft and distribute press releases, media advisories, and statements.
- Maintain and update media contact lists and press kits.
- Coordinate media interviews and logistics for university spokespeople.
- Monitor media coverage and compile daily/weekly reports.
- Support rapid response efforts during issues or crises.
- Partner with marketing colleagues to align earned media goals with ad campaign goals, ensuring consistency across paid, earned, and owned channels.
- Work closely with marketing partners to showcase earned media achievements within marketing communications and materials.
External Messaging
- Collaborate with editorial and executive communications teams to identify media-worthy stories.
- Assist in developing messaging frameworks and talking points for external audiences.
- Ensure consistency and alignment of external messaging across platforms and departments.
XM: Experience Management
- Support the collection and analysis of external experience management data.
- Collaborate with UR colleagues to monitor sentiment across external audiences including prospective students, alumni, and the public.
- Translate feedback and insights into communications strategies and content.
- Support the development of messaging that reflects audience experiences and expectations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
- Familiarity with media relations practices and tools.
- Ability to interpret audience data and sentiment to inform messaging.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field.
- 0-1 years experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a beat structure.
- Experience working in a higher education field.
- Research writing.
Working Environment
- Standard office environment.
- Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
- Noise level is quiet to moderate.
Physical Activities
- Ability to work in front of a computer for extended periods of time.
- Occasionally required to move about the office/campus.
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Salary
Salary Grade Number: The salary grade for the position is 7. Hourly Range: The hourly range for the position is $25.54 - $27.10.
