The Townsend School of Music at Mercer University seeks a highly qualified musician and educator to cultivate a dynamic piano program at the undergraduate and graduate levels (Master of Music and Artistic Diploma) as a Faculty of Music, Piano.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinating the keyboard area (including placement exams, assignments for applied lessons and ensembles across the School of Music, academic advising to music majors in piano)
  • Teaching applied lessons to piano majors (undergraduate and graduate)
  • Coaching chamber music
  • Teaching piano literature
  • Teaching and leading class piano
  • Recruiting students at the undergraduate and graduate levels to build and maintain the quality and visibility of the program
  • Maintaining a regional, state, national and international performance and scholarship profile
  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned based on applicant's qualifications and interests

Specific duties include:

  • Coordinator of the keyboard area
  • Teach applied piano and class piano
  • Coordinate the recruitment efforts of the keyboard area
  • Coordinate piano placement exams and assign keyboard students for applied lessons
  • Provide academic advising to music majors
  • Participate in faculty governance
  • Work closely with the local music teacher's association
  • Adjudicate state, regional, and national piano competitions
  • Attend MTNA conferences and conventions and present sessions when possible
  • Perform with students, faculty and ensembles as needed

Qualifications:

  • Doctorate of Music required
  • Demonstrated record of or potential for excellence in teaching including the ability to recruit highly qualified students
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in performance as a soloist and chamber musician
  • Evidence of successful administrative experience and coordination

The successful candidate will be an active performing artist with a commitment to liberal arts education. Teaching experience at the college or university level is highly preferred.

Appointment: This is a 9-month tenure-track appointment, beginning August 2026. Rank and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
