Overview

Speech Communication Adjunct Instructor at SAE Institute. Instructors apply the Student-Centered Active Education model to teach, inspire, motivate, guide, and support students in their assigned courses and programs. Instructors are expected to participate in regular faculty and professional development activities to advance teaching and learning at SAE.

Responsibilities

  • Teach classes as assigned in accordance with SAE policies and procedures.
  • Deliver instruction aligned with the Student-Centered Active Education model.
  • Establish a classroom environment conducive to learning and student engagement.
  • Contribute to a learning culture by participating in academic advising, curriculum development, and campus events (workshops, new student orientation, graduation) as requested.
  • Manage the learning environment by keeping accurate attendance records, submitting grades and reports on time, and enforcing SAE policies.
  • Plan and prepare for classes and student success, developing course activities that support learning outcomes.
  • Contact, advise, and support absent and high-risk students and document contact activities.
  • Complete faculty development activities annually to improve instructional delivery, professional knowledge, and support for diverse learners.
  • Maintain instructor eligibility according to applicable regulations.
  • For full-time instructors, supervise scheduled makeup sessions, provide tutoring and academic advising, advise student clubs, support faculty development activities, and substitute for classes in emergencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Experience

For General Education courses: A minimum of a master’s degree with 18 semester credits or 24 quarter credits in the area of the course(s) assigned to teach. For example, teaching College Mathematics may require graduate-level credits in Mathematics even if the master’s degree is in a different field.

For program courses toward a Diploma or Associate’s Degree:

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree; if the bachelor’s degree is not in the field taught, a credential in the field at or above the program level is required.
  • A minimum of 4 years of industry experience since completing the qualifying degree.
  • In rare cases, an adjunct may receive a temporary exception by the Chief Academic and Compliance Officer with progress toward a bachelor’s degree during the exception period.

For Program Courses Toward a Bachelor’s Degree:

  • A minimum of a master’s degree; if the master’s degree is not in the teaching field, a credential in the field at or above the program level is required.
  • A minimum of 4 years of industry experience since completing the qualifying degree.
  • In rare cases, an adjunct without a master’s degree may receive a temporary exception by the Chief Academic and Compliance Officer with progress toward a master’s degree during the exception period.

Desirable Skills

  • Familiarity with the Canvas learning management system
  • Familiarity with learner-centered, active learning, and problem-based/project-based methodologies
  • Advanced skills in Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel

Additional Information and Physical Requirements

This is a part-time onsite, campus-based position. Potential for standing for long periods and light lifting of materials (up to 25 pounds). Occasional movement within the campus and use of keyboard and monitor for extended periods.
