Overview

The Library Media Specialist is responsible for establishing and coordinating the services of the school library-media center and technology lab to meet the educational needs of all students. This includes providing a full spectrum of educational enrichment materials and teaching students and staff to use information and technology effectively to foster reading, viewing, and information literacy.

Responsibilities

  • Administers a program that provides learning experiences utilizing technology and resources accessed from classrooms or other locations outside of the library information center.
  • Analyzes instructional and technological requirements and recommends appropriate staffing and training to meet learning and information needs.
  • Assists teachers and learners in developing activities to assess curriculum effectiveness and in creating interdisciplinary connections.
  • Collaborates with staff to identify and use a full range of learning technologies required to meet students’ informational needs.
  • Catalogs, classifies, and arranges information resources in various forms and media according to recognized standards.
  • Collaborates with the technology department to plan budgets and purchases software and hardware to meet curriculum needs.
  • Provides instruction in information literacy and the use of technological tools to support learning and independent inquiry.
  • Supports the school curriculum and integrates the library program with instruction to promote student achievement.
  • Plans, develops, and maintains a management system for print and non-print resources, equipment, and other learning technology resources.
  • Demonstrates leadership in curricular planning, assessment, and program evaluation to improve teaching and learning.
  • Plans and implements access to a full range of information resources and services; fosters equitable access for staff, students, and the community.
  • Plans instruction collaboratively with teachers and other members of the learning community.
  • Supports teachers and students with selecting materials and resources for learning about diverse interests and needs.
  • Maintains inviting physical spaces that encourage a positive learning climate and effective library resource programs.
  • Supervises library support personnel as assigned and manages related operations.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience with managing school site collections and the selection/acquisition of materials and equipment.
  • Previous teaching and/or related school experience.
  • Employment in this class is conditional upon possession of a valid Connecticut State Board of Education teaching certificate/endorsement(s) appropriate to the teaching assignment (School Library Media Specialist – 062 Endorsement).
  • Additional requirements: background check; various state CEU requirements for recertification; may require a valid Motor Vehicle operator's license.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities include information literacy standards, collaboration, technology proficiency, curriculum integration, reading guidance, and effective communication with stakeholders.
