Job Description The Public Safety Dispatch (PSD) Radio Technician is responsible for the oversight of the City's public safety radio system and the communications section facility, equipment, and supplies. The PSD Radio Technician will assess and maintain the inventory related to communications equipment and technology. The PSD Radio Technician will manage vendor relations and related administrative tasks along with being assigned special projects within the communications section as they arise. In support of the Boca Raton Police Services Department Communications Center and the City's public safety radio system, the Technician will perform assigned work under direct supervision from the communications section commander.Essential Functions
- Provide day to day support to city radio users including making minor repairs as needed
- Responsible for the citywide radio inventory with the aid of computer software
- Monitors radio system performance software, alarm status and other system indicators
- Tracks and prepares radios to be sent out for repair
- Tracks and maintains citywide radio related work orders
- Programs the city's portable and mobile radios
- Manages the annual updates and preventive maintenance of all police and fire radios along with the bi-annual city government radio updates and maintenance
- Manages the installation of city wide mobile radios
- Manages the inventory of police radio accessories
- Maintains the city's FCC radio licenses
- Manages all police issued cell phones (inventory and activation)
- Manages and follows up on the communications section facility work orders
- Monitors requisitions, purchase orders, and receivers for the radio and communications section equipment
- Acts as a liaison with the city's contracted maintenance vendors for the public safety radio system and the communications section
- Responsible for follow up and documenting the resolution of outstanding vendor support tickets
- Manages and maintains the communication sections emergency evacuation equipment
- Manages the weekly maintenance of the communication sections emergency backup location(s)
- Will act as the primary escort for vendors within the CJIS designated secure areas
- Orders and maintains the inventory of most equipment and supplies for the communications section
- Establishes employee log in credentials for assorted vendor programs
- Assists with the administration of projects and programs
- Assist in the Communications Center as a public safety dispatcher or call taker as needed
- Performs all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an on going awareness of safety practices
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of:
- Public safety communications equipment
- Federal, State and local regulations governing data and voice transmissions
- Operation of two-way radios
- Facility maintenance
- Use of a variety of Microsoft Office Suite products to include Word, Excel, and Outlook, at an intermediate level.
- Operation of RTCC consoles
- Organize, keep detailed records and prepare reports
- Effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders
- Type at a minimum rate of 35 words per minute
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, other government officials, vendors and associates
- Manage multiple activities simultaneously while maintaining a high degree of attention to detail
- Serve the public and interact with fellow employees with honesty, integrity, and respect
- Provide outstanding customer service, both internally and externally
- Work a flexible work schedule that includes weekdays, weekends and evenings as needed
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school
- Minimum of one (1) year experience in the field of 911 communications or working with public safety radio systems
- Obtain the Florida Department of Health 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator certification within a year of employment
- State of Florida Class “E” driver's license
CERTIFICATIONS / PROFESSIONAL LICENSES: The public safety dispatch radio technician must be able to obtain the CJIS (NCIC/FCIC), 9-1-1, TDD and Florida Department of Health 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator (FSS 401.465) certifications, within the first six months of employment.
