Overview

The Washington Times is seeking an experienced, aggressive reporter based on Capitol Hill to cover Congress. This reporter will also cover political campaigns and political fundraising. The successful candidate will be a strong, fast writer who can quickly file breaking news and generate exclusive stories that capture the impact of legislation and policy on the public, the politics at play, and the personalities who shape the nation’s laws and spend taxpayers’ money.

This position is based in Washington, D.C. Non-standard working hours are part of the job. The ideal candidate possesses three to seven years of news experience writing, interviewing, observing, researching and reporting, preferably covering Capitol Hill. A bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications or Political Science is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Cover Congress on Capitol Hill and report on political campaigns and fundraising.
  • Generate exclusive stories with clear, vivid, and concise writing.
  • Rapidly file breaking news and provide updates as events unfold.
  • Explain the impact of legislation and policy on the public and identify the key political dynamics and personalities involved.

Qualifications

  • At least three years of news reporting experience, particularly in covering government and the legislative process, with preference for Capitol Hill coverage.
  • Strong, fast writing skills and ability to work under non-standard hours.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications or Political Science preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Base pay range: $70,000.00/yr - $95,000.00/yr. The Washington Times offers medical, dental, vision, and company-paid life insurance, a generous paid time off program, a matching 401(k) plan, and free on-site parking.
