General Statement The Library Assistant, under general supervision, provides basic paraprofessional library services in an assigned service area of responsibility to support daily library operations.
Seeking an enthusiastic and creative individual to work part-time in the teen department and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) Lab of Southwest Regional Library in Waxhaw. All part-time employees will be working approximately 20 hours per week and will include some mornings, evenings and Saturday hours on a rotation. To do this job, you must possess strong customer engagement skills, a great sense of teamwork, and a passion for serving patrons. Our ideal candidate must be extremely tech savvy, possess strong interpersonal skills, and be creative. This position will be directly responsible for interacting with teen patrons, creating active and passive teen programs and STEAM programs for all ages, and maintaining the teen collections. Essential Functions Meets the needs of each patron by promptly and efficiently using the library's resources.
Responds to the needs of coworkers in work unit.
Helps maintain the collection.
Answers telephone queries quickly and efficiently, referring callers to the appropriate library department.
Maintains knowledge of library policy and procedure.
Reports any unsafe or threatening condition to library security personnel, administration, or proper authorities.
Attends staff development programs.
Possesses basic knowledge of library's electronic and physical resources.
Helps advocate for the library and its services in both internal and external settings.
Accepts changes in hours or assigned tasks as needed to provide excellent public service; adheres to assigned schedule with regular and dependable attendance.
POSITION SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS Teen and Technology Services
Provides basic reader's advisory assistance to teen and adult patrons by selecting age appropriate and reading level appropriate materials using library reader's advisory tools and resources. Assists with providing age appropriate programs for patrons ages 12-18 years in accordance with the library's programming guidelines. Assists in maintaining an inviting and inclusive teen space. Assists with the STEAM Lab and provide programming and activities. Conducts impromptu library orientation and tours.
Qualifications Library Assistant ($16.48 - $24.72 Hourly):
Education and Experience: Requires an Associate's Degree and one (1) year of experience of customer service; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Library Associate ($17.00 - $25.50 Hourly):
Education and Experience:
Requires a Bachelor's Degree and one (1) year of customer service experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Library Specialist ($20.80 - $31.20 Hourly): Education and Experience:
Requires a Bachelor's Degree and two (2) years of experience in customer service; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Requirements:
This position may be subject to a fingerprint background check. Per ), applicants for a position of employment required to work with children in any capacity will be required to electronically submit fingerprints to the NC State Bureau of Investigation for a state and national criminal history record.
Supplemental Information PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, printers, telephones, pagers, cash registers, book chargers, copiers, answering machines, fax machines, etc. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. However, if the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work. Employees assigned to homebound must be physically able to drive a motor vehicle. WORK ENVIRONMENT
