Job Summary
The UT Dallas University Library is seeking a Metadata Assistant to ensure patrons have seamless access to library resources. In this role, you will perform copy cataloging of newly received books using OCLC’s bibliographic database and the Alma system. By maintaining accurate records in the library’s online catalog, you will play a vital role in helping users easily discover and access materials.

Minimum Education And Experience
High school diploma or equivalent. A minimum of 1 year of relevant experience in a library setting; or any comparable combination of education and practical experience may be considered.
Preferred Education And Experience
- One or more years of experience working in a library setting
- Proficiency with basic computer skills, with the ability to complete tasks accurately, efficiently, and on time
Other Qualifications
To the extent this position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Section 117.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired and to continue to be employed in the position.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Use the OCLC bibliographic database to search for records and import them into the Alma system, including cataloging new resources in both physical and electronic formats (orders and gifts).
- Edit bibliographic records to meet local standards, including creating holding records, item records, and spine labels for each cataloged book. Perform name and series authority work on cataloged materials, as well as special authority clean-up projects. Must be able to comply with RDA, MARC, and AACR2 cataloging rules, be familiar with Library of Congress subject headings, and assign Library of Congress classification numbers.
- Edit or remove records for weeded items, including checking OCLC Connexion records to delete UTD holdings, marking weeded items, and preparing them for surplus.
- Apply general knowledge of physical processing of books and other materials to assist with rush processing as needed.
- Attend meetings and training sessions to stay current with procedures, policies, and local practices.
- Participate in library-wide committees and forums to support growth and professional development.
- Adhere to UT Dallas and library work rules and practices, including (but not limited to) attendance, scheduled breaks, maintaining a clean and safe work environment, professional demeanor, and dress code.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Must be capable of lifting, carrying, and managing materials weighing up to 20 lbs.
- Ability to stand or sit for prolonged periods while performing various tasks.
