Dow Jones Newswires is seeking a dynamic, fast and ambitious reporter to cover economics, the Fed and government policy in New York City. This is an opportunity to write market-leading breaking news for Dow Jones, the global authority in business journalism and publisher of The Wall Street Journal. The Newswires is the real-time financial news service of The Wall Street Journal, covering business, economics, finance and markets for a professional audience of traders, fund managers, analysts and wealth advisors. A key focus is low-latency news about the world’s interest-rate policy setters.

To bolster our coverage of the Federal Reserve, Newswires seeks a reporter to write breaking news headlines, stories and support real-time coverage of Federal Reserve policy decisions. You will monitor public appearances of the Federal Reserve regional presidents and, as needed, flex into economic policy coverage that affects everyday Americans. You will also write headlines and stories about U.S. economic data points such as monthly jobless claims, the Beige Book, durable goods, Conference Board consumer confidence, manufacturing and production numbers.

Responsibilities

  • Break news – big and small scoops that will drive professional readership to Newswires.
  • Tap existing sourcing or demonstrate an ability to build sourcing for breaking economic news.
  • Exercise exceptional news judgment to identify disclosed news of importance to professionals, prioritize and summarize into smart briefs and subsequent analysis of what the news means for investors.
  • Recognize and respond to the core audiences for Dow Jones Newswires, and their needs and expectations.
  • Collaborate with reporters and editors from other groups, including Dow Jones Newswires, WSJ and other Dow Jones colleagues and those in other bureaus and regions.
  • Communicate precisely and respectfully.
  • Uphold Dow Jones standards and ethics.

Qualifications

  • A well-honed sense of urgency along with the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • The ability to prioritize tasks and time while handling multiple responsibilities.
  • Intellectual curiosity and a desire to learn.
  • Flexibility in changing/handing off tasks.
  • General awareness of how a newsroom works.
  • A solid sense of teamwork.
  • A minimum of two-three years of relevant experience.

Additional information

This position will be based in New York and report to Patrick Sullivan, Breaking News Editor at The Wall Street Journal.
