Overview

City of Mission Viejo invites applications for Librarian I and Librarian II positions in the Library & Cultural Services Department. This is a hands-on, professional role responsible for designing, planning, coordinating, implementing, analyzing and evaluating library services and programs, and providing complex professional and technical library services to the community.

Salary: Librarian I — $29.99 - $43.62 per hour; Librarian II — $31.26 - $48.20 per hour. APPLY BY: 3:00 P.M., FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2025.

The Position

Currently, there is one full-time vacancy in the Library & Cultural Services Department. The position is scheduled to work either Sunday through Thursday or Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and one late shift per week from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The schedule may vary depending on the needs of the City, including evenings and weekends. This is an FLSA non-exempt position entitled to overtime. The eligibility list established during this recruitment may be used to fill future full-time, part-time or temporary Librarian I or Librarian II vacancies.

Your Impact as a Librarian Assigned to Community Engagement

  • Assists with regular programs and special events.
  • Directs and participates in the compiling and analysis of library activity reports and statistics.
  • Designs, plans, coordinates, promotes, and implements ongoing and special programs for all ages in the library and in the community.
  • Responds to community feedback and suggestions as it pertains to programs and community engagement.
  • Assists in developing marketing materials both in print and online for library programs and services.
  • Regularly attends outreach events to promote library programs and services.
  • Assists in developing and maintaining partnerships with other community groups and local schools.
  • Provides tours for outside groups, including schools.
  • Plans and implements the Summer Reading Program for all ages.
  • Works with teen and adult volunteers on a variety of programs and projects.
  • Maintains statistics and prepares reports as they pertain to programs and outreach.
  • Interprets and applies library policies and procedures for customers, staff, and community groups.
  • Assists and participates in the evaluation, selection, acquisition, retention, discarding, or special handling of library materials.
  • Provides Readers’ Advisory services for patrons.
  • Maintains a liaison with other librarians in the community; attends professional meetings, workshops and other conferences; performs special readings and research to remain abreast of current library practices.
  • Maintains a liaison with other groups in the community and helps coordinate library services with other services to the same target groups.
  • Provides staff support to higher-level classifications.
  • Serves as in-charge Librarian as needed.
  • Assists in circulation activities as needed.
  • Participates in and/or prepares employee performance evaluations as required.

Qualifications

Librarian I: Equivalent to a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in library science or a related field. No experience required.

Librarian II: In addition to the above, two (2) years of related experience.

License

A driver’s license is not required, but the employee must be able to arrange for reliable and timely transportation to offsite facilities and public outreach events to complete essential functions.
