Overview
Social Sciences Librarian – University of Michigan Library, Ann Arbor, MI. Full-time position with salary range $66,000.00 - $123,600.00 annually. Application deadline: Oct 3, 2025. The Social Sciences and Clark Library team collaborates with colleagues throughout the library, campus, profession, and beyond to promote education, discovery, and honesty. The librarian participates in outreach, engagement, instruction, and consultation to support research lifecycle service provision on the U-M Ann Arbor campus. The role includes collaboration with other social sciences librarians and specialists, delivering existing services and developing new services, collections, and programs to support research, teaching, and learning in the social sciences. The designated liaison to the School of Social Work (SSW) with potential assignments to other social science schools or departments, and collaboration on Evidence Synthesis Services and additional projects as assigned.
Responsibilities
- Liaison & Outreach (40%)
- Provide outreach to faculty and students in the School of Social Work and other social sciences programs, including interdisciplinary centers and institutes such as ICPSR and MIDAS.
- Promote access to knowledge by connecting researchers with library services, expertise, and systems, aligning library resources with research and teaching interests to increase responsiveness.
- Promote library collections and services, and encourage student and faculty participation in Library events and programs.
- Advocate for improved library services to better support users\' research, teaching, and learning needs.
- Research Consultation & Instruction (40%)
- Partner with faculty to develop appropriate course-integrated instructional workshops.
- Provide reference and consultation research services to faculty and students in social work and related fields.
- Cultivate and contribute to evidence synthesis and advanced reviews through consultation, programming, and collaboration with library colleagues.
- Partner on the design and implementation of evidence synthesis efforts, including systematic reviews, scoping reviews, and related work.
- Contribute to the social sciences team\'s expansion of expertise in qualitative data analysis tools and methods, and other advanced technologies.
- Collection Development & Management (10%)
- Lead acquiring, managing, and assessing collections in all formats in assigned subject areas (e.g., social work, gerontology, allied fields) and related endowments, gifts, and budgets.
- Professional Activities (10%)
- Participate in professional activities contributing to research, teaching, and service, including memberships in professional organizations, conference attendance, creative projects, and service.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- At least 3 years of experience as a social sciences or health sciences librarian.
- Advanced degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent discipline.
- Knowledge of research trends, pedagogy, interventions, and programs in the field of social work.
- Demonstrated experience leading search strategy development and documentation related to Evidence Synthesis services.
Desired Qualifications
- Advanced degree in a social sciences or health sciences discipline.
- Experience conducting evidence synthesis reviews in the social sciences using databases on multiple platforms (e.g., EBSCO, ProQuest, Web of Science).
- Experience using and training others in evidence synthesis project management tools (e.g., Covidence, DistillerSR).
- Experience supporting or instructing on developing and refining research scope, critical appraisal, data extraction or coding, synthesis approaches, and archiving supplemental material.
- Experience with research data management, including data issues and practices (data management planning, access and discovery, data sharing, metadata, preservation).
- Knowledge of latest digital tools and methodologies supporting new research, teaching, and learning in the social sciences, humanities, or international studies.
Work Arrangements
Modes of Work: Positions may be hybrid or remote at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually and may change for any reason during employment.
Additional Information
The anticipated hire date is January 2026. Appointment may be at Associate Librarian, Sr. Associate Librarian, or Librarian rank, with salary and rank dependent on qualifications and experience. Target salary ranges: Associate Librarian $66,000–$76,000; Sr. Associate Librarian $76,000–$89,600; Librarian $89,600–$123,600.
This appointment is subject to the UM/LEO-GLAM collective bargaining agreement. Librarian appointments include higher expectations for professional development, engagement, research, and service as part of promotion and advancement processes.
