The Daily Beast is seeking a dynamic and dedicated Breaking News Reporter to join our team in New York—a fast-paced newsroom focused on earning the trust and respect of our readers as our top priority. The Breaking News Reporter will report and write quick, high-impact news items on topics ranging from national news and politics to pop culture and celebrity. The ideal candidate will produce stories that stay a half-step ahead of the competition, maintain a high news metabolism, and proactively find sources, sift through public records, and identify fresh angles on established reporting.

Responsibilities

• Report and write quick, high-impact breaking news items across national news, politics, pop culture, and celebrity.
• Stay ahead of the competition by maintaining a high velocity of news coverage and initiative in sourcing information.
• Find sources, review public records, and identify fresh takes on established stories.

Qualifications

• One to two years’ experience writing breaking news.
• A voracious news diet across digital, linear, and social platforms with interest in politics, pop culture, power, and big issues in national and global conversations.
• A strong, confident writer’s voice aligned with The Daily Beast brand.
• Team player willing to collaborate with editors and other reporters for comprehensive coverage.
• Self-starter who can conceive and execute stories with impact; able to take initiative, receive constructive feedback, and work with minimal supervision.
• Comfort meeting quick deadlines and flexibility to work outside normal hours; weekend shift pattern may be required (e.g., Tues-Sat or Sun-Thurs).
• Prior knowledge of web publishing and using a content management system is a plus.

Compensation

The pay range for this full-time position is $57,500-65,000. Actual salaries may vary based on work location, experience, and other factors.
