Overview

Salary Information: The salary for this position is negotiated through a collective bargaining agreement. All new employees will be hired at the minimum salary in the range and will be eligible for merit increases until reaching the maximum salary in the range.

Definition Incumbents are lead workers assigned to guide, monitor, troubleshoot, repair, perform quality assurance and a variety of complex and extensive Network and Data Communication Security functions and projects related to the operation of the department’s radio communications systems. They also design, develop, integrate, and maintain the department-wide radio systems and related equipment with significant, policy, and operational implications.

Training, Education and Experience

  • Nine years of increasingly responsible experience troubleshooting, installing, repairing and maintaining advanced radio communications equipment, radio systems applications and radio systems networks, preferably in a public safety or military environment or equivalent combination of experience and/or education.
  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid, appropriate Nevada driver license.
  • Be a citizen/naturalized citizen or permanent resident alien without conditions on status of the United States of America by the date of the first test instrument
  • Be at least 18 years old by the date of the first test instrument

Best Candidates Will Have

  • Possession of a bachelor’s degree in computer science, cybersecurity, computer programming, networking, information technologies, telecommunications, or closely related field, OR an equivalent training, education, and experience.
  • Possession of an FCC License (GROL, Amateur License, etc.), and ideally NICET In-Building Public Safety Communications (IB-PSC) certification or equivalent for specialized public safety systems.
  • Possession of any network certifications at the Associate level or higher (CCNA, JNCIA, etc).
  • More than nine years of progressively responsible hands-on experience troubleshooting, installing, repairing, and maintaining advanced radio communications equipment, systems applications, and networks, in law enforcement, emergency services, or military operations including leadership in guiding and training technical staff.
  • Experience with the development, installation, implementation, and maintenance of network devices including switches, firewalls, patch panels, routers, and microwaves.
  • Experience with developing, implementing, and overseeing security policies, cyber-security audits, handling of encryption/security-related incidents, with a strong emphasis on compliance and risk mitigation.
  • Experience in the administration of a large county-wide radio system, including administration of user accounts, domain controllers, virtual machines, Windows/server operating systems, software implementations, configuration updates/changes in server environments, networking equipment, and cloud-based integrations.
  • Experience with the AES Encryption standard and encryption/key management systems, as it relates to radio systems.
  • Proficiency in component-level repair of radio equipment, including VHF, 700/800 MHz trunked systems, microwave systems, and aircraft communications with adherence to electrical safety standards and FCC regulations.
  • Experience with the development, installation, and maintenance of VoIP, Radio, and Analog recording systems.

Conditions of Employment

In addition to the General Conditions of Employment, the following specific conditions of employment and physical conditions apply to this position:

  • Personal Appearance: While on duty, and/or representing the Department, uniformed or otherwise, all Department employees will be neat and clean in their appearance in public. Employees are prohibited from attaching, affixing, or displaying objects, articles or jewelry on or through the nose, tongue, eyebrow or other exposed body part, except the ears for females, while on duty. Employees are prohibited from stretching or gauging their earlobes. All jewelry implants will not be exposed or visible while on duty. Tattoos or branding will not be exposed or visible while on duty and/or representing the Department. Such markings must be covered by clothing. Markings that cannot be covered by clothing will be covered using neutral-toned bandages or patches except for hands, neck, head, or face tattoos. Makeup is not permissible to cover a tattoo. Tattoos or branding anywhere on the body that promote racism/discrimination, indecency, extremist or supremacist philosophies, lawlessness, violence, or contain sexually explicit material are prohibited.
  • Obtain and maintain a valid FCC General Radio Telephone Operator License or FCC Technician-Class Amateur Radio License within 12 months from date of hire.
  • Obtain and maintain Juniper Networks Certified Internet Associate within 12 months from date of hire.
  • Maintain a valid, appropriate Nevada driver license.
  • Participate in the LVMPD Mental Wellness Program.
  • Vision sufficient to read computer screens, fine print in documents and distinguish fine details on electronic boards as well as color-coded cables.
  • Dexterity and mobility sufficient to operate standard office equipment, mechanical and electrical equipment, and tools; operate motorized vehicles and climb towers.
  • Agility sufficient to twist, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach overhead, and navigate uneven surfaces.
  • Lift, move, and carry mechanical, electrical parts, and equipment with or without aid of equipment at a heavy strength level.
  • Endurance sufficient to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time to complete assigned tasks; stand and move around while working indoors, outdoors or within confined space; and/or to wear required safety equipment.

Exam Dates: Oral Board Exam (Weighted 100%) - Wednesday, October 29, 2025. The LVMPD reserves the right to modify the selection processes and test instruments.

Additional Selection Processes

If you complete the above selection process, you will undergo a thorough background investigation, including a polygraph exam. The background investigation takes approximately 90 to 120 days to complete and you must meet LVMPD Hiring Standards. LVMPD employees participate in random drug screening.
