Overview
The Department of Public Safety is looking for a DPS Operations Specialist to assist in the departments Police Radio & Fleet Programs. This position is integral to the function of DPS and involves all aspects related to mobile and portable police radios, marked and unmarked patrol vehicles and non-sworn vehicles, installation and maintenance and repair of police equipment, and inventory management of DPS vehicles and related police equipment.
Primary Duties
- Emergency two-way radio installation, repair, programming, troubleshooting, deployment, inventory, and coordination of the DPS/UHP 700 MHz & VHF L3 Harris radios & systems. May also include more in-depth management of complex communications equipment with coordination between state and local agencies.
Secondary Duties
- Provides technical/hands-on assistance with agency radio communication systems, radar/lidar programs, vehicle emergency equipment.
- Troubleshoots and diagnoses problems, makes adjustments, repairs and/or performs preventative maintenance across multiple disciplines.
- Fleet management, to include the documentation, assignment, inventory, and coordination of the DPS/UHP Fleet.
- Coordination of vehicle upfitting and replacement.
- Basic evaluation, troubleshooting, and repair of emergency vehicle emergency equipment.
- Emergency equipment research, procurement, inventory, and distribution. Also includes the inspection and evaluation of used equipment for reuse.
Additional Requirements
- Requires regular physical exertion that may include: standing, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, and lifting moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or over long periods of time
- Requires safe operation of a Department vehicle and occasional forklift use
The Ideal Candidate
- Familiarity and experience with police radio systems, programing, minor repairs, and troubleshooting of issues
- Familiarity and experience with Utah's 700 MHz P25 radio system and the VHF radio system
- Familiarity and experience with L3 Harris mobile and portable radios
- Familiarity and experience with installing and repairing police vehicle emergency equipment
- Use organizational and management skills to facilitate the mission of the Department
- Able to make decisions, identify key facts, explore alternatives, and propose quality solutions.Able to communicate and interact with Department personnel in a professional and courteous manner
- Ability to communicate and interact with vendors and suppliers in a professional and courteous manner
