Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners is hiring: Substitute Library Assis

Overview

The Westwood Public Library seeks courteous and enthusiastic candidates for the position of Substitute Library Assistant. We are seeking collegial, energetic team players who thrive in an inviting and engaging environment. This position will primarily provide library services in the Information Services Department at both the Main and Islington Branch Library. Hours may vary from week to week and shifts may include mornings, afternoons, evenings, and/or weekends.

Responsibilities

• Deliver service in a courteous, confidential, knowledgeable, and effective manner to ensure a positive library experience for all patrons.
• Perform circulation duties, including registering and processing library cards.
• Frequently assist with automated returns and self-checkouts of materials; shelve returned items.
• Assist patrons at the Circulation Desk and by phone with account questions and with reserving museum passes through an online reservation system.
• Maintain integrity of the patron database.
• Assist with program registration, promote programs, and provide program information.
• Provide general information and direction as needed, resolve patron service concerns with courtesy and tact.
• Assist with daily lifting and/or moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds such as books, equipment and supplies.
• Uphold Westwood Public Library tenets of equity, diversity and inclusion, intellectual freedom, literacy and patron privacy.
• Be available to work at the Main or Branch Library and fill in at various service desks including Circulation and Children’s as needed.

Schedule

Hours may vary from week to week and shifts may include mornings, afternoons, evenings, and a regular weekend rotation. A typical shift is 4 – 7 hours.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree or equivalent experience in a similar setting preferred.
• PC proficiency, excellent customer service and organizational skills are essential.
• Ability to interact effectively and tactfully with the general public while establishing rapport with patrons of all ages.
• Previous library experience preferred.

Salary Notes

This is a non-benefit position. Starting salary is $21.42 per hour. Sunday shifts pay an hourly rate of time and one-half.
