Volunteer Grant Writer Position Summary

Ignite Arts & STEM is a growing nonprofit dedicated to empowering BIPOC students pursuing careers in Arts & STEM fields. We achieve this through scholarships and mentoring, facilitating their transition from student to professional. Currently funded by individual donors, we're expanding our programs and seeking a passionate Volunteer Grant Writer to help us secure vital grant funding.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in fundraising and grant writing, develop a deeper understanding of nonprofit management, and build a strong professional network. We highly encourage retirees, stay-at-home parents, and H-4 Visa holders to apply!

Purpose

You'll play a crucial role in helping Ignite Arts & STEM achieve its mission to uplift, inspire, and engage Arts & STEM scholars. As a Volunteer Grant Writer, you will be instrumental in researching, writing, and coordinating our grant application process, and assisting with donation management.

This is a fully virtual role that requires someone capable of working independently with minimal supervision. While our headquarters are in Tarzana, CA, you do not need to reside in the Los Angeles metro area as all meetings are virtual. However, you must live in the United States to apply for this position; this role is not suitable for individuals seeking to gain work experience to maintain other specific visa statuses.

Position Description

The Volunteer Grant Writer will work directly with Ignite Arts & STEM's Board President, Vice President, and Treasurer. Your primary responsibilities will include:

Grant Writing

  • Develop and write compelling grant proposals and reports for foundations, corporations, and government agencies, aligning with our grants calendar and reporting requirements.
  • Foster best practices for all grant-related functions, including proposal writing, budget development, and data integrity.
  • Gather necessary institutional information from various Ignite Arts & STEM departments to craft strong case statements, letters of intent, proposals, and reports.

Research & Planning

  • Identify and research prospective corporate and foundation donors.
  • Develop effective solicitation strategies to secure funding for Ignite Arts & STEM initiatives, strategically linking programmatic goals with fundraising opportunities.
  • Monitor relevant news and grant trends pertinent to Ignite Arts & STEM's needs, including local grants, private foundations, and budget processes.

Goal Setting

  • Collaborate to set annual goals for proposals written, funds raised, and new prospects.

Relationship Development

  • Gain a deep understanding of Ignite Arts & STEM's history and programs to articulate them effectively in written proposals.
  • Support the development and nurturing of relationships with institutional funders.

Position Requirements

We are seeking a dedicated and driven individual with:

  • Ability to articulate and model Ignite Arts & STEM's mission, vision, and values.
  • Working knowledge of Google Workspace and/or Microsoft Office.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to set priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential matters with the utmost integrity.
  • Reliable access to a phone and computer.
  • Ability to dedicate at least 8-10 hours per week on average (as needed).

  • In 2024, we were honored to be the recipient of The Slalom Foundation's Social Equality Initiative (SEI) Grant.
  • Also in 2024, we received the Los Angeles 2nd District Community Grant.
