The West Vancouver Memorial Library has an opening for a permanent part time Librarian I position working in the Youth Department working with preschoolers, kids, teens, families, and educators. WVML’s Youth Department is high-functioning, innovative, inclusive and proud to serve the community of West Vancouver. All Librarians in our Youth Department have robust outreach portfolios.

The duties and responsibilities may change based upon operational needs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide patrons of all ages with expert and enthusiastic reader’s advisory, research support and instruction at our Youth Department Information Desk and while roving
  • Planning and implementing developmentally appropriate and forward-thinking programming, ranging from early years storytimes to middle years and family programs
  • Representing the Library and Youth Department at outreach visits and community events
  • Managing assigned Youth Department collections in all formats– including selection of materials for purchase, analysis of collections and use, inventory, and coordination of systematic weeding
  • Maintaining and building our rich partnerships and relationships with schools in West Vancouver, community groups and other organizations
  • Collaborating on projects with staff across Library departments
  • Act as a Designated Staff Member in Charge on evenings and/or weekends

Qualifications

  • The preferred candidate will possess: a Masters Degree in library and information science from an accredited school
  • Minimum of one year of experience working as a Librarian or Student Librarian
  • A class 5 drivers license and ability to drive the Library car
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; experience and comfort with public speaking and giving presentations
  • An anticipatory and flexible mindset; demonstrated problem-solving, time management and creative thinking capabilities
  • The ability to manage a diverse set of responsibilities and competing priorities
  • A passion for working with young people and the adults who support them
  • Deep knowledge and love of children’s and young adult literature and media; comfort with and curiosity about emerging technologies and commitment to continuous learning and development
  • The ability to use a variety of tools essential to the Library including Bibliocommons, Sierra (ILS system), Excel and CMS (content management system)
  • The ability to deliver programming and reference services in more than one language will also be an asset

Other requirements

  • The successful candidate is required to supply a police information check and a copy of their credentials

Position details

  • Position Status: Union (WVMEA) – Permanent Part Time
  • Hours of Work: 30 hours per week (hours and days of work may vary)
  • Starting Rate of Pay: $40.13 per hour
  • (This position has a pay structure with five steps which increase annually.)
