Overview

The Kenneth F. Kahn School of Law at High Point University invites applicants for the position of Access Services Librarian. The Access Services Librarian serves as a vital link between the Kenneth F. Kahn School of Law Library and its patrons. The occupant of this position will offer expert guidance and personalized support to help patrons navigate and use library resources in various formats. Other responsibilities of this position are circulation services, interlibrary loan, and supervision of library specialists or student employees. This individual will report to the library director. The anticipated start date for this position is December 1, 2025.

Qualifications

Education:

  • A Master of Library Science degree (or its equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program is required.
  • A JD degree is an advantage.

Experience and Training:

  • A minimum of two to three (2-3) years’ experience working in an academic or law library is required.
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience working with OCLC WorldShare Management Services (WMS) platform is preferred.
  • Familiarity with legal bibliography is required.

  • Willingness to contribute actively to the mission, vision, goals, and objectives of the School of Law and University.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and listening skills sufficient to work effectively with School of Law faculty, staff, students, and prospective students.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills that enable candidates to communicate with friendliness, enthusiasm, patience, and respect.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills, attention to detail, self-motivation, and the ability to work collaboratively and independently.

Essential Functions:

  • Under the supervision of the Library Director, manage circulation operations in the law library, including interlibrary loan, faculty reserves, and document retrieval.
  • Answer phone and email inquiries to the library from professors, students, and members of the High Point University community about library materials and services.
  • Assist in developing, reviewing, updating, and distributing information about newly acquired materials.
  • Participate in hiring, training, scheduling, and supervision of circulation desk student workers.
  • Along with other librarians, assist in maintenance of the library space, including provision of supplies to patrons and policy enforcement.
  • Promote library services.
  • In collaboration with other librarians, develop the law library emergency procedures.
  • Provide guidance and support to patrons on using study room reservation system.
  • Along with the technical services librarian, ensure that students, faculty, and staff have access to and understand how to use School of Law Library subscribed databases and other state of the art technologies in use at the law library.
  • Compile library statistics for accreditation and other purposes.
  • In collaboration with other library staff, create a conducive environment for study and research.
  • Travel to attend national and regional professional association meetings and conferences.
  • Participate in library orientations for new students and professors.
  • Participate in routine staff meetings.
  • Participate in other administrative duties essential to the mission of the University, Kenneth F. Kahn School of Law, and the law library.

  • Reports to the law library director.
