Job Description:
The News Coordinator serves as a news reporter for the newsroom for a nonprofit educational community radio station, Redwood Community Radio (RCR) KMUD-FM, KMUE-FM, KLAI-FM and K258BQ. This position requires a dynamic professional who can balance journalistic excellence with efficiency while fostering local voices and community engagement. The News Coordinator will uphold the highest editorial, ethical, and technical standards in news production and reporting. Open, honest communication and collaboration—both within the newsroom and with external partners—are essential to this role.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Set and coordinate editorial priorities for the newsroom in alignment with station mission and community needs
- Select daily news stories and initiate special features, themed coverage, and investigative follow-ups
- Review, edit, and approve all content for broadcast, ensuring accuracy, fairness, and adherence to journalistic standards
- Ensure diverse local news coverage with emphasis on under-reported topics and relevance to the community
- Anchor, as scheduled by News Director, Monday–Friday 30-minute news broadcasts, maintaining consistent on-air presence and professionalism
- Create and produce public affairs news segments, interviews, and special programming, as directed by the News Director
- Meet daily news deadlines while maintaining quality standards under pressure
- Develop story ideas that reflect community interests and amplify local voices
Ethical Reporting & Community Inclusivity
- Uphold the highest standards of journalistic ethics, including accuracy, independence, fairness, and accountability
- Ensure unbiased, non-partisan reporting that serves the public interest without advancing personal or organizational agendas
- Actively seek out and amplify voices from underserved and marginalized communities
- Develop specialized coverage and relationships within tribal communities, respecting sovereignty and cultural protocols
- Create inclusive coverage of LGBTQ+ community issues, events, and perspectives with cultural competency and sensitivity
- Implement editorial policies that promote equity and inclusion in source selection and story framing
- Regularly evaluate coverage patterns to identify and address gaps in community representation
- Establish protocols for respectful reporting on sensitive topics affecting marginalized communities
- Ensure newsroom practices reflect commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion principles
Technology & Digital Operations
- Maintain proficiency with newsroom technology, including audio editing software, broadcast equipment, and content management systems
- Troubleshoot technical issues and coordinate equipment maintenance and upgrades
- Manage and update station website news content and social media platforms
- Create and produce podcasts from daily broadcasts and special programming
- Develop and implement digital archiving systems for news content
Emergency Broadcasting & Preparedness
- Maintain and update procedures for civil defense and news emergency coverage
- Coordinate with local emergency management agencies and first responders
- Ensure 24/7 capability for emergency broadcasting activation
- Train staff on emergency broadcasting protocols and equipment operation
- Develop and maintain emergency contact lists and resource databases
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Broadcasting, or related field
- Minimum 3-5 years experience in news production, radio broadcasting, or related media
- Proven experience in staff supervision and team leadership
- Demonstrated knowledge of journalism ethics and legal requirements
Technical Skills
- Proficiency with digital audio editing software (Pro Tools, Audacity, Adobe Audition)
- Experience with broadcast equipment, mixing boards, and recording technology
- Strong computer skills including content management systems and social media platforms
- Familiarity with podcast production and distribution
- Basic understanding of web content management and SEO principles

- Training in diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in media
Working Conditions
- Requires flexible schedule including early mornings and occasional evenings/weekends
- On-call availability for breaking news and emergency situations
- Regular community event attendance outside normal business hours
- Physical ability to operate broadcast equipment and work in studio environment
- Reliable transportation for community events and news gathering
