Overview

The Department of Music at the University of Virginia seeks applications for a Lecturer in Music with a specialization in Horn. An initial three year appointment begins on August 10, 2026, with subsequent reviews occurring on a three year cycle. This is a half-time, benefits-eligible, tenure-ineligible position.

Responsibilities

  • Performing as Principal Horn in the Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia
  • Coaching orchestra horn sectionals
  • Coaching a chamber music ensemble
  • Pursuing additional performance opportunities
  • Maintaining a studio of primarily undergraduate students; private lessons are compensated beyond the wages of the primary teaching duties

The UVA Music Department supports a vibrant performance program featuring ensembles across new music, jazz, wind ensembles, and more. It also offers programs in Composition and Computer Technologies, and Critical and Comparative Studies. Qualifications

Applicants must have a master’s degree in music by the date of appointment. Successful teaching and recruiting experience at the university level and evidence of significant experience as a solo and ensemble performer are desired. Candidates should be comfortable teaching students of varying skill levels (music majors and non-majors) and teaching a range of techniques and repertoires.
