Job Summary

Coordinating Producer I is responsible for the creative development, preparation, strategy, and execution of the storytelling elements produced by our enhanced editing teams (SCEU [Sportscenter Enhancement Unit] and RISE). The CP I will lead the day-to-day operations of both teams and work to align and maximize the collective resources of these two teams. The CP I will collaborate with studio leaders to ensure content is relevant and maximized. This role includes standard ESPN content executive management responsibilities such as overseeing and developing staff, setting editorial direction, navigating production workflows, managing budget performance, and ensuring staff compliance with corporate processes.

Responsibilities

  • Help develop a strategy and plan for aligning the SCEU and RISE enhancement teams to maximize collective staff and resources.
  • Plan and coordinate storytelling elements presented as both short and long form content for predictive and reactive timelines.
  • Pitch, project, and collaborate with show leaders to meet needs and guide content opportunities on the sports calendar. Collaborate with show groups, sport group leaders, clients, and stakeholders to understand needs and expectations. Ensure content selection aligns with ESPN viewer trends and applies sound editorial judgment. Identify content likely to be compelling and relevant to shows and suggest appropriate ideas.
  • Maintain a breaking sports news plan for the edit team to produce quick-turn editorial pieces as the news cycle dictates.
  • Oversee the production process from start to finish, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and with allocated resources.
  • Communicate and maintain a solid, nimble production and personnel plan. Be prepared for regular changes in day-to-day operations due to production priorities, corporate shifts, or personnel decisions. Stay connected with other departments to ensure seamless communication and adapt as necessary.
  • Assess, prioritize, develop, and implement production schedules and timelines.
  • Assess, prioritize, manage, and allocate resources with a “content first” approach.
  • Ensure content compliance with industry production standards and regulations. Troubleshoot and resolve production-related issues and coordinate with partners across the organization to account for the ESPN edit enhancement teams in resourcing and feedback on tech and content issues.
  • Pitch and identify potential integration opportunities with other ESPN platforms, especially on high-rated air opportunities or larger corporate priority events.
  • Oversee all team personnel schedules and assignments with the management team.
  • Supervise and mentor junior production staff; oversee the management team.
  • Maintain and update production documentation, regular communications, record-keeping, and content archiving.
  • Responsible for spending and budgeting at every stage, from projection through actualization.
  • Willingness to work non-traditional hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to support a collaborative, around-the-clock production environment.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 7 years progressively complex related studio or related journalistic experience.
  • Established expertise in creating and producing compelling edited sports content.
  • Knowledge of studio production management workflows, broadcast formats, and execution.
  • Skilled in organization, communication, writing, and editing (including copy editing). Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Technical knowledge of production workflows for typical storytelling shoots and post-production workflows including all edit platforms, high-end animation platforms, audio finishing, color correction, and video finishing.
  • Compliance with leading a team abiding by legal, ethical, and business standards, including rights and clearances, corporate policies, and HR guidelines.
  • Up-to-date understanding of sports headlines, music trends, pop culture trends, social media trends, and sports history and audience preferences.
  • Ability to collaborate across multiple departments, identify efficiencies, and leverage resources to reduce silos.
  • Experience mentoring emerging producers.
  • Experience in deadline-driven environments requiring quick turnarounds.
  • Familiarity with sports and sports history.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of ESPN's market positioning strategies and corporate priorities, including DTC workflows and their impact on user experience.
  • Knowledge of hiring vendors, crewing, union restrictions, workforce classifications, budgeting, compliance, and legal responsibilities in complex content production.
  • Leadership skills with the ability to provide constructive feedback and navigate cross-departmental needs.
  • Advanced technical knowledge in complex production scenarios and new technologies (AR/VR/XR, GenAI, cloud editing, HDR, VFX workflows).

Education

  • Required: Bachelor’s Degree
  • Preferred Education: Bachelor’s degree in journalism, broadcasting, communications, or sports management.
