Overview This posting is for Communication Aide positions that provide services to students at various schools within the Hawaii District as needed and assigned by the Hawaii District-South Special Education/Special Services Office.
Salary Range: Communication Aide, SR-12: $3,260.76 per month
Responsibilities Provide reinforcement lessons and repetitive drill activities in speech and/or language correction to students, in accordance with an educational/treatment plan developed by a Speech Pathologist; receive specific instructions from the Speech Pathologist regarding remediation activities to be provided to the student.
Assist students in improving their speech and/or language skills; instruct students in the correct usage of the mouth, jaw, lips, tongue, teeth, and diaphragm; provide remedial activities for correct pronunciation of vowel and consonant sounds.
Correct students’ misunderstandings of communication; teach students how to attend and respond to verbal communication; assist in teaching socially appropriate language with regard to time, place, situation, and person(s) involved.
Record all pertinent data related to speech and/or language activities as directed by the Speech Pathologist; arrange remediation sessions with school personnel involved.
Participate in conferences with parents, designated school personnel, and the Speech Pathologist; coordinate remediation sessions with school personnel and provide input on student progress.
Adapt and devise materials and activities to meet individual students’ needs; provide follow-up home activities and materials relevant to students’ specific needs.
Gather information and data on students’ progress in tutorials and behavioral observations; score appropriate responses for remediation as indicated by program guidelines.
Assist the Speech Pathologist in preparing and developing materials and activities for intervention strategies.
Attend training sessions and workshops.
May provide clerical services for the Speech Pathologist and/or the diagnostic team.
Basic Education Requirements Applicants must possess a high school diploma, General Equivalency Diploma (GED), or equivalent AND one of the following minimum education requirements, established within the parameters described by the Federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001:
48 semester credits from an accredited institution of higher education recognized by the Hawaii Department of Education. Of the 48 credits, 3 must be in math and 3 in English.
An Associate in Arts (AA) or Science (AS) degree or higher from an accredited institution recognized by the Hawaii Department of Education, with a minimum of 48 credits that are baccalaureate level.
Successful completion of the ParaPro Assessment provided by the Educational Testing Service (ETS).
Experience Requirements Except for substitutions provided in this specification, applicants must have two years of progressively responsible experience providing supportive services to professional personnel directly engaged in the academic, personal, social and/or vocational development of children, with at least one year involving assisting in learning activities of children.
Specialized Experience: One year of progressively responsible work experience assisting a Speech Pathologist in implementing educational/treatment plans for individuals with speech and language disorders, including providing remedial activities under direct supervision and knowledge of common speech and language problems, child development related to speech and language, and adapting materials to individual needs.
Additional notes: A school year of approximately 180 teacher duty days (about 38 weeks) is considered equivalent to one year of required work experience.
Special Requirements Applicants must demonstrate the ability to hear and speak English clearly to perform duties effectively.
Substitutions Allowed (Education for Experience) One year of an Associate in Science program for Teacher Aide without practicum may substitute for one year of General Experience that did not involve assisting in the learning activities of children.
One year of Associate in Science program in Teacher Aide including practicum may substitute for one year of General Experience including the learning activities of children.
An Associate in Science degree in Teacher Aide with practicum may substitute for all General Experience.
Bachelor’s degree in education or equivalent may substitute for all General Experience.
Bachelor’s degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology may substitute for all required experience.
Quality of Experience: Possession of the required number of years of experience will not, by itself, be sufficient to qualify; the overall experience must demonstrate the ability to perform duties.
Driver’s License Applicants must possess a current, valid driver’s license.
Salary: The advertised salary is based on full-time employment and includes any applicable shortage and school-year differentials.
Requirements and Evaluation Applicants must meet all requirements for the position as of the application date. Calculation of experience is based on full-time, 40-hour weeks; part-time experience is pro-rated. Hours beyond 40 per week are not credited.
Temporary Assignment Temporary Assignment (TA) experience must be verified and attached to the application using one of the options below: TA History Report, supervisor letter with TA details, or signed SF-10 forms.
