Base pay range $26.00/hr - $28.00/hr The NBOME is seeking an Editor I that will substantially contribute to the quality control of items (test questions) at various levels of development in regard to style, format, clarity, and clarification of medical-content issues. The Editor I will collect, research, and communicate specific issues with items authors and with editing and test development staff. The communication will include independent interactions with item writers and reviewers and facilitation of virtual and in-person workshops and review meetings. An ability to learn an in-house style guide and foundational knowledge of basic punctuation, grammar, and writing is a must. Note: This position follows a hybrid schedule with remote work on Monday and Friday and requires mandatory on-site work Tuesday through Thursday. Occasional full-day Friday on-site meetings will be required. Saturday meetings may also be required 2–6 times per year with advanced notice . No evening work is expected. Office Location: Rosemont/O'Hare Area of Chicago Department: Licensure Assessment Services and Collaborative Assessments Responsibilities Edit items for NBOME medical assessments at all stages of development (e.g., developmental, copyediting, and proofreading). Implement an in-house style guide and conduct research to verify medical terminology. Screen test questions for person-first and bias-free language. Suggest item references for consideration of review committees. Work with the team to ensure that editing projects are completed on time. May provide feedback and mentoring to assistant editors. Lead small groups of subject matter experts (SMEs) and review sessions, onsite and virtually. Deliver short presentations to larger groups (~20) on best practices in item writing. Support Exam development processes which may include conducting a final review of exam content before publishing; reviewing test-taker comments on items, and planning/wrap-up for item-writing workshops. Cultivate ongoing communication with item authors, ensuring strong collaborative relationships and providing timely, tactful, and detailed exchanges of item revisions. Collaborate with subject matter experts and in-house physicians to address editorial concerns. Edit department reports, research summaries/proposals, and PowerPoints as needed. Other duties as requested. Qualifications 1 year experience with proofing, fact-checking and/or copy/manuscript editing Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) Experience with medical terminology preferred Mastery of fundamental editing principles and best practices Excellent written and verbal communication skills Flexibility and positive team-oriented attitude Organizational skills and ability to multi-task Ability to apply house style guide within 6 months of experience/training Ability to edit independently within one year of experience/training Ability and desire to lead groups of subject matter experts in writing and review activities Elementary experience with medical editing, including appropriate research terminology preferred An understanding of examination blueprints and test development processes ideal. This is a non-exempt position with an hourly rate between $26.00-$28.00. The hourly rate could be modified in the future.
