Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a nonprofit dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability in New York City. Through mentorship, academic enrichment, social-emotional learning, and creative expression, MAP creates safe, consistent, and empowering spaces for young people to thrive.
The MAP Music Studio introduces students to the art of music creation and performance. From instruments and vocals to digital music production, the program helps students discover their voice, build confidence, and explore the role of music as a tool for storytelling, healing, and community.
Role Overview We are seeking Volunteer Instructors for MAP Music Studio to teach students the fundamentals of music. In this role, you will guide students through hands-on lessons in rhythm, melody, songwriting, and performance, while fostering creativity, collaboration, and self-expression.
Key Responsibilities Teach the basics of music theory, rhythm, and composition in age-appropriate ways
Introduce students to instruments, vocals, or digital music production (depending on skills)
Mentor students in songwriting and performance, encouraging creative confidence
Collaborate with teachers and MAP staff to adapt lessons to classroom needs
Support students in creating original pieces or performances to share with their peers
Encourage teamwork, cultural appreciation, and creativity through music
Qualifications Background or strong interest in music, performance, or production
Passion for teaching, mentorship, and youth engagement
Strong communication and facilitation skills
Ability to make music accessible and engaging for students of varying experience levels
Teaching, tutoring, or workshop facilitation experience (preferred but not required)
Commitment to inclusivity, equity, and cultural sensitivity in education
Commitment Volunteer role, approximately 5–10 hours per week (lesson prep + delivery)
Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
Hybrid model in-person visits to New York City schools with remote prep and planning
