Position overview Position title: Instructor (Non-Senate, Non-Tenure Track) Salary range: The compensation model varies by course delivery format. For a synchronous Live Online course, the total per course is typically between $1,500 and $3,600. For an asynchronous Fixed Date Online course, pay is $150–$170 per enrolled student, with a total per course typically between $1,200 and $3,400. Compensation may be shared among co-instructors depending on content taught. Instructor pay is determined by course length, units, enrollment, budget, and other factors. Percent time: Part-time by agreement on a per-course basis. Anticipated start: Some appointments may begin as early as the spring semester. Review timeline: Applicants are considered as needs arise; pool existence does not guarantee a position. The pool remains in place for 9–12 months; those wishing to remain beyond the advertised closing date must reapply. Position duration: Course length varies by subject, level, format, schedule, and credits. Typical fall/spring/summer courses run 6–12 weeks. Further course assignments may follow program needs, meritorious performance, and funding availability. Position Description UC Berkeley Extension (UNEX), the continuing education branch of the University of California, Berkeley, connects UC Berkeley with the public. UNEX serves professional and continuing education goals for thousands of people each year and supports the University mission to extend research and scholarship, increase access to higher education for non-traditional, online, and international students, and improve the workforce. UC Berkeley Extension is part of the division led by the Dean of Extended Education, alongside Berkeley Summer Sessions, Berkeley Study Abroad, and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. We invite applications for a pool of qualified instructors with a commitment to professional and continuing education in UX Design, UI Design, and UX Research to teach online courses for our Arts and Humanities department. Courses Are Offered Online Online instruction is delivered asynchronously through the learning management system (Canvas) or through synchronous live lectures (Zoom). Most synchronous live online courses are offered in the evening and on weekends (USA Pacific Time). Course Subjects Qualified applicants with subject matter expertise and/or teaching knowledge in UX Design, UI Design, and UX Research are sought. UX-UI Design UX Research Methods Other UX-UI Design and UX Research topics (please specify in your cover letter) General Duties The department seeks candidates who support student success through inclusive curriculum, classroom environment, and pedagogy. Duties vary by instruction method (Synchronous Live Online or Asynchronous Online). Synchronous instruction duties include syllabus development, assignments, lesson planning, updating Canvas, and delivering lectures and activities for required hours. Asynchronous instruction duties include reviewing syllabus and content, using Canvas tools, and coordinating trainings as needed. For all instruction: complete required trainings, respond to student questions, grade assignments, post final grades, use approved platforms (Canvas, Zoom, Google Workspace, etc.), follow policies, and respond to Program Director/Department Director requests. Qualifications Basic qualifications Bachelor's degree or equivalent international degree required. Additional qualifications (required at start) 5+ years of professional industry work experience since degree, or 5+ years of teaching experience since degree. USA residency and USA work authorization required; no visa sponsorship expected. Preferred qualifications Advanced degree in UX Design preferred. 5+ years in UX design, AI, voice design, web/design, product design, or related fields. Experience in User Research methods (quant/qual). Proficiency with design thinking and tools (e.g., Figma, InVision, Miro, UXPin, AI tools). Experience with AR/MR/VR; VUI design tools; technical content writing; online teaching experience; ability to convey complex ideas; commitment to inclusive pedagogy; strong communication and organizational skills.
