Responsibilities Provide regular content for the "Red Alert" blog. Blog posts are typically 300-500 words and assigned by the Communications team each month.
Write human interest stories that highlight the work of volunteers, leaders, donors, disaster victims, etc. Feature stories are typically 500-1,000 words and may require telephone interviews or face-to-face interviews.
Identify supporting visuals for blog and feature stories.
Work independently to find unplanned content related to Red Cross to share on the blog.
Interview affected families, obtaining a story and signed information release form for each interview.
Submit stories to the public affairs desk.
May be asked to shoot photos with your smartphone if a photographer isn’t available.
Blogger/Writers may be asked to send a photo or one-take video from an event or scene to be used immediately on social media sites.
During times of disaster, writers should be able to navigate difficult terrain and volunteer at odd hours.

Qualifications Experience writing blog posts or feature stories and ability to conduct interviews (telephone or in person).
Ability to identify and select visuals to accompany stories.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple assignments.
Willingness to travel, work odd hours, and participate in disaster response as needed.
Comfort with capturing photos or short video for use on social media when needed.
