Production Editor (Princeton, NJ Hybrid) - News Corp

HarperCollins is currently seeking a Production Editor to oversee the production editorial process on a wide variety of titles in the Morrow Group.

Responsibilities

  • Specifically, the Production Editor handles production editorial work from manuscript through bound book for diverse formats, including one-, two-, and four-color books, cookbooks, novels, and nonfiction titles across varied genres and subject matter.
  • Assess and style manuscripts for copyediting, design, and composition using Microsoft Word and Harper’s proprietary software.
  • Hire freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers and oversee their work.
  • Collate and process proofreads and slugs in Adobe Acrobat and check all stages of interior proofs and PDFs.
  • Copyedit flap and back cover copy and proofread and check all stages of jacket/cover proofs.
  • Work with editors, designers, authors, managing editors, and production managers in anticipating and resolving problems.
  • Evaluate and coordinate artwork as needed.
  • Shepherd multiple projects while maintaining high standards of quality control and meeting strict deadlines, often under tight production schedules.
  • Mark up PDFs for audio recordings.
  • Attend and contribute to online department meetings as needed, working with colleagues from other imprints to continue streamlining and aligning processes.
  • Provide backup for department as needed.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of prior production editorial work experience. Prior experience in trade book publishing strongly preferred.
  • Work comfortably with basic computer programs, including Tracked Changes in Word and the commenting tools in Adobe Acrobat.
  • Solid copyediting and proofreading skills; knowledge of industry standards, including the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Exceptional organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to set priorities under pressure.
  • Comfortable working within a digital workflow system.
  • Clear, conscientious, and collaborative communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • College degree or equivalent work experience.

The salary range for this position is $54,500- $62,000. We recognize that attracting the best talent is key to our strategy and success as a company. The quoted salary range represents our good faith estimate as to what our ideal candidates are likely to expect, and we tailor our offers within the range based on the selected candidate’s experience, industry knowledge, technical and communication skills, and other factors that may prove relevant during the interview process.
