Library Assistant (Short‑Term Hourly Temporary)

Responsibilities

  • Assist students, faculty, and other patrons in the use of library media equipment, materials, services, and facilities.
  • Perform circulation duties: check materials in and out, collect fines, remove blocks, clear liens, issue cards, and answer reference queries.
  • Maintain statistical records for circulated items and generate monthly and annual circulation reports.
  • Demonstrate operations of assistive technology equipment and software programs to faculty, staff, students, and disabled students.
  • Process new and donated books, place jackets, bookmark files, and check items in through circulation.
  • Open and prepare the library for daily use, check equipment for proper operation, and run day‑end reports.
  • Close the library, run day‑end reports, count the cash box, and lock doors.
  • Train and provide work direction to student assistants and assist library technicians as needed.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school and one year of general library experience (or equivalent).
  • Basic knowledge of college library principles, procedures, and terminology.
  • Familiarity with circulating library materials and the operation of library equipment.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Record‑keeping techniques and correct English usage, grammar, and spelling.
  • Proper lifting techniques and the ability to lift, bend, stoop, and reach.
  • Ability to type at 40 words per minute from clear copy and perform basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division quickly and accurately.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written, and the ability to follow directions.

Physical Effort

  • Light lifting and carrying of books.
  • Pushing and pulling carts.
  • Walking and standing for extended periods of time.
  • Reaching horizontally and above the shoulders to shelve and reach books.
  • Bending, kneeling, and dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard library equipment.

Working Conditions

Normal library environment.

  • Short‑Term Hourly Employees may work up to 25 hours a week (not to exceed 100 hours per month) for a total of 999 hours over 100 days.
