Position Summary

Instructor (Regular Non-Tenure Track) – Jazz and Commercial Percussion, Department of Music, Holland College of Arts and Media.

Faculty Assignments

  • Teach undergraduate applied drum set lessons.
  • Teach in jazz and commercial music areas, which may include: jazz band, combo, commercial ensembles, percussion ensemble, steel drum band, and/or marching band front ensemble.
  • Other teaching duties as assigned, which may include: music theory, jazz theory, jazz appreciation, history of rock, music technology, etc., depending on department need and candidate strengths.
  • Actively participate in recruitment and retention efforts on- and off-campus.
  • Participate in service, advising, and academic duties to the department and the University.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in music or teaching. (Degree must be from a regionally accredited or internationally accredited/government-certified university.)
  • Experience as a jazz/commercial drum set performer/recording artist. Elevated profile as a jazz/commercial drum set performer/recording artist is a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching music. College teaching experience and teaching western classical and jazz music theory is a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience with music technology. Experience with music technology in marching band front ensembles is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate students and work collegially when interacting with the University community.
  • Commitment to recruiting and retaining students.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Context and Mission

As a public regional university (with a graduate mission), SEMO seeks candidates with a commitment to excellent undergraduate (and graduate) education and student success within the teacher-scholar model.
