Job Summary
The BYU-Hawaii Music Program is looking for a talented and energizing faculty member to temporarily direct the Studio Orchestra and teach Music Theory I during the 2025-2026 school year.
*Adjunct Faculty may teach up to but not more than 9 credit hours in the Fall and Winter semesters, and 6 credit hours in Spring semester.
Responsibilities
- Direct the BYU-Hawaii Studio Orchestra during Fall 2025 and Winter 2026 semesters (4 credits per semester).
- This role includes recruiting, auditioning, repertoire development, concert planning, and performance.
- The Studio Orchestra is a 45-person orchestra (often including select vocalists) specializing in 20th-century popular, jazz, film, television, cartoon, childrens albums, and light classical repertoire. Two student employees assist with librarianship, and with management of instruments and folders.
- Teach MUSC 111 Music Theory I Fall 2025 and Winter 2026 (3 credits per semester).
- Teach studio lessons if/as assigned (subject to student demand), including the possibility of teaching Spring 2026.
Qualifications
- DMA or PhD in music preferred; Masters or Bachelors degrees in music with significant professional experience will be considered.
- Experience directing ensembles that might include orchestra, concert band, jazz ensemble, and vocal jazz/pop ensembles.
- Experience teaching in academic music classrooms in disciplines that might include music theory, composition, arranging, songwriting, counterpoint, and orchestration.
Approximate starting adjunct semester contract $1,425 - $2,175 per credit, the wage offered is dependent upon applicants degree and years of university level teaching experience.
