THE OPPORTUNITY

Come make something brand new with us! Unknown Worlds is seeking a Senior Tech Artist to help drive development on a new game project. The ideal candidate combines technical expertise with an artistic eye, ensuring high-quality, stylized visuals while supporting efficient workflows. This is a hands‑on, collaboration‑focused role for an excellent communicator with a passion for creating beautiful and immersive worlds. This is a remote position on a fully distributed team, looking for a candidate with the flexibility to collaborate with a team located primarily in the East and West Coast USA.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Drive state‑of‑the‑art visuals by applying relevant, modern techniques and trends.
  • Develop and implement shaders, materials, atmospheric effects, skyboxes, and other applicable techniques in Unreal Engine; own and evolve the project's material library and parent materials.
  • Create and refine art pipelines to enable efficient, high‑quality asset production.
  • Build procedural tools and artist‑friendly workflows that support dynamic world‑building using Nanite, Lumen, and Unreal's procedural systems.
  • Enforce art budgets and assist with rendering optimization to meet platform and performance targets.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and clear documentation of best practices and workflows to elevate the team's overall expertise.
  • Participate in playtests and help evaluate visuals as part of the overall player experience.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years of professional technical art experience, including at least one shipped title from pre‑production through launch.
  • Deep expertise in Unreal Engine and advanced knowledge of its feature set, including Nanite, Lumen, and procedural content generation tools.
  • Proficiency with shader development and scripting (Blueprints, Python, or equivalent).
  • Strong cross‑disciplinary communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to navigate between art, design, and engineering disciplines to solve complex visual and technical challenges.
  • Strong initiative, curiosity, and organizational ability.
  • Experience with Substance Designer/Painter, Houdini, and related tools.

PREFERENCES

  • Experience with multiplatform development, including console.
  • Experience creating dynamic, physics‑driven FX such as fluid simulations or interactive particle systems that respond to gameplay and environment.
  • Broader background in additional art disciplines (animation, lighting, rigging, or VFX).
  • Comfortable working as part of a fully remote team.
  • Experience with C++.
