Description

Filling the vacant communications coordinator position is essential to maintaining the continuity and effectiveness of the digital presence of UH Wellness in the Division of Student Affairs. This role provides dedicated expertise to creating and implementing streamlined, comprehensive, multidisciplinary student health and wellness communications, social marketing initiatives, and social media strategies that supports student engagement and departmental operations while directly contributing to campus well‑being and student success.

Coordinates communications activities in support of a university program, including, but not limited to, publications, newsletters, annual reports, web site, and informational and solicitation materials.

1. Coordinates various communications projects, to include compiling, editing, and layout of materials.
2. Works with other departments to research, obtain material and organize the content of written communications.
3. Provides content for regular updates of the program web site.
4. May be responsible for producing regularly recurring communications such as annual reports, monthly publications or newsletters.
5. Provides writing and editing services for other communication projects as assigned.
6. Represents the program at conferences and community events.
7. Performs other job‑related duties as required.

Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical or professional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than one professional discipline. Knowledge of the discipline is normally obtained through a formal, directly job‑related 4 year degree from a college or university or an equivalent in‑depth specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed. Requires a minimum of three (3) years of directly job‑related experience.

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Director of Wellness and Health Promotion, the Health Communication Specialist is responsible for creating and implementing streamlined, comprehensive, multidisciplinary student health and wellness communications, social marketing initiatives, and social media strategies aligned with the Be Well to Do Well framework.

Responsibilities

  • Apply best practices in health communication to design and implement materials that educate and promote individual health and wellness, and positive wellbeing culture change within the campus community.
  • Collaborate with colleagues from the other Health and Wellbeing (HWB) departments to enhance education and engagement in programs and services that support students’ health and wellness.
  • Develop ideas for material to be presented in a variety of formats (e.g., flyers, reports, web‑based materials, forms, email messages, publications).
  • Collaborate in the ongoing development and implementation of the HWB portfolio web and social media presence.
  • Design, manage, and evaluate health communication campaigns; use evidence‑based strategies including social marketing; determine appropriate channels for different populations and create effective messages that are tailored to the intended audience(s).
  • Conduct research and data analysis to identify and measure communication goals and audiences, clarify content, and identify appropriate venues and design.
  • Work in alignment with DSA and UH Marketing and Communications to ensure consistency of messaging and non‑duplication of communication efforts around campus wellbeing and student success.
  • Supervision of student or professional staff may be required.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in health communications, public health, health education, communications, public relations, marketing, or related field, plus 2-3 years of work experience developing communication materials in health communications, public relations, student affairs, or social marketing, or Associate’s degree in relevant field plus 5 or more years of relevant work experience.

Minimum Skills and Experience Requirements

  • Robust computer skills and advanced working knowledge of web‑based technology, social media, survey instruments, graphics, publication and media presentation software (i.e. Adobe Creative suite, Photoshop, and Microsoft Office suite), as well as competency with web design and development for mobile devices.
  • Knowledge of comprehensive practices in health communication.
