Overview
This position is responsible for directing the library's Tween (Grades 3-5) and Teen (Grades 6-12) programs and for performing other duties of a librarian.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Develops, coordinates, promotes and presents programming for tweens and teens, including evening and weekend programs, summer reading programs, community outreach , and special events.
Partners with outside agencies, nonprofit organizations, city departments, businesses and other local, regional and national organizations to bring cutting edge tween and teen programming to the library.
Schedules, trains, directs, and coordinates the work of library staff and volunteers as directed by Library Director.
Assists and instructs patrons in using library services, facilities and equipment.
Develops and monitors collection development plan for tween and young adult collections, including materials selection and weeding. Responsible for appearance and order of tween and teen collections.
Remains up to date on developments and trends in tween and young adult library practices, standards, and procedures.
Helps maintain the library Children’s and Teen Services procedure manuals.
Works cooperatively with other librarians and staff to promote the use of digital tools and resources to serve our community.
Conducts library tours.
Resolves patron complaints and concerns.
Participates in development of library policies, procedures and plans as part of library management team.
Assists patrons at the Children’s area desk using the library's automated system; places holds on materials; assists patrons in locating materials in the collection.
Answers in-person and phone inquiries; provides reference services and instructions to customers via print, media, and computer resources and library databases. Assists patrons with reference queries and genealogical research. Helps customers locate needed materials and refers customers to other appropriate assistance.
Assists and instructs patrons in the use of computer applications, databases, on-line public access catalog, and answers technology questions.
Design posters and special displays to promote use of library facilities or specific programs.
Works closely with other librarians to plan, promote, and support programs for all ages. Steps in to assist or provide coverage for other service areas when needed to ensure a positive experience for library patrons.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Library Director assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The Library Director spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include library policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
The work consists of varied duties in support of the operations and services of the city library. Frequent interruptions contribute to the complexity of the work.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
The work is typically performed in a library.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of library principles, practices, and trends.
Ability to plan, coordinate, and present engaging programs for tweens and teens.
Strong customer service and communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with tweens, teens, patrons, and community partners.
Proficiency with current technology, digital resources, and social media platforms commonly used by teens and tweens.
Ability to work effectively as part of a collaboration team and provide support across service areas when needed.
Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as scheduled.
Bachelors preferred or a combination of the knowledge of library services and at least three years of experience working with Teens, Tweens and Youth services.
Must possess and maintain a valid South Dakota driver’s license.
