Position Purpose

The Library Assistant supports the daily operations of the Upper School Library. This employee performs circulation, technical services, and/or acquisitions duties, and enforces all School and Library policies and procedures. The Library Assistant should enjoy working with teenagers in a lively environment and be comfortable managing large groups of students.

Essential Functions

  • Serves as the primary point of contact at the circulation desk and warmly welcomes all library patrons and guests.
  • Performs the opening and/or closing procedures of the library and related department areas as needed.
  • Answers directional and informational questions, referring reference/research questions to the librarian.
  • Shelves books and creates engaging displays for library materials and services.
  • Processes incoming library books and maintains the orderly appearance of the library's physical collections.
  • Helps to troubleshoot and maintain laminator and printer/copier.
  • Maintains a quiet, respectful, and welcoming library environment for all patrons.
  • Maintains circulation statistics such as current checkouts, overdue materials, and holds.
  • Participates in department outreach and engagement activities as needed including organization, set up, and promotion as directed.
  • Ensures seamless continuity of library services during all hours of operation by communicating with fellow library staff in a timely manner.
  • Recommends age-appropriate fiction and nonfiction titles to support recreational reading and curriculum needs.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required, bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Experience working in a school or library environment preferred.
  • Strong interest in working with teenagers in an academic setting.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook); comfortable learning new software systems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills; ability to multi-task and prioritize in a busy setting.

Physical Requirements And Work Environment

  • This position requires the ability to lift fifteen pounds. Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to bend at the knees and utilize step stools to shift, shelve, and retrieve books and materials. Must be able to perform tasks such as cutting, labeling, taping, and working at a computer keyboard which involves a reasonable amount of wrist and hand movement.
