GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs routine semi-skilled and skilled work such as basic labor, repair, upkeep, and maintenance of Library facilities, grounds and equipment; does related work as required.

Work is performed independently under general supervision by the Assistant Library Director for Planning and Facilities. This position is based at the Main Library but work will also be performed at all other Durham County Library locations. Some weekend hours may be required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Completes Facilities work order tickets in order of priority to ensure appropriate level of attention within established time frame; routes work order tickets to General Services when necessary
  • Performs opening duties and building inspection; identifies problems, determines solutions and/or repair needs and performs necessary work
  • Receives, sorts and distributes deliveries from other libraries, vendors, and County departments
  • Performs interior building maintenance duties including vacuuming, sweeping, and removing stains from a variety of surfaces, minor electrical, plumbing, and carpentry
  • Performs minor repairs and maintains equipment
  • Maintains Facilities storage room; keeps inventory of equipment and supplies
  • Maintains and cleans the loading dock area
  • Conducts inspections, ensuring vehicles are properly maintained, serviced, and cleaned; promptly reports all maintenance needs to supervisor
  • Safely operates County and/or personal vehicles while conducting Library and County business; adheres to County Vehicle Policy
  • Provides routine delivery of mail, materials, equipment, books, etc. to all library locations; picks up weeding and surplus furniture and equipment from locations and delivers to the warehouse; and provides courier service to County agencies
  • Escorts vendors, contractors, and other outside agencies to assigned work areas and ensures that all security measures are in compliance with library standards
  • Sets up and takes down conference and meeting rooms
  • Performs related tasks as required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • General knowledge of the materials, equipment and tools used to assist in the repair and maintenance of building and grounds
  • Ability to acquire knowledge of the methods and techniques of a standard trade within a reasonable time period
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions
  • Ability to operate equipment in a safe manner
  • Ability to use good judgement to analyze problems, recommend solutions and make decisions.
  • Good physical condition
  • Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office (Outlook, Teams, Word, and Excel)
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the public and other employees

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience in the repair, construction or maintenance of equipment and/or facilities or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds on an occasional basis.

UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT)

  • Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
    • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
    • Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
    • Extreme noise levels.
    • Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.
    • Traffic; moving machinery.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES

Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to speak Spanish
