The Rum River Library invites volunteers to support its mission to connect the community with ideas, information, and inspiration. Volunteers assist in a variety of ways, including keeping materials organized, assisting patrons with technology, mentoring youth, and participating in community outreach events.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Meet with assigned student each week during after‑school hours for the Reading Bridge season (fall, winter, summer).
- Lead a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grader in weekly 45‑minute sessions that include reading aloud, having the student read aloud, playing literacy games, and doing activities designed to build literacy skills.
- Choose books to read together and checkout books at home, and set reading goals for the week.
- Complete online training and a short in‑person orientation before beginning mentoring duties.
- Assist library staff with programs, outreach events, and community programs as needed.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Minimum commitment of 3 months with typical shifts of 1–2 hours per week.
- Age 15+ for Reading Mentors; open to adult volunteers for one‑time events throughout the year.
- Successfully pass a criminal background check.
- Ability to read aloud, engage a child, and follow simple instructions.
- Positive attitude, reliability, and a willingness to learn about library services.
