ESOL Instructor (Part Time) - Wakefield Library
Join the New York Public Library as an ESOL Instructor for the Wakefield Library, teaching adult students in English language and digital literacy. This part‑time role works on a cycle basis, providing free instruction to community patrons in a supportive library setting.
Overview
Adult English Language and Literacy (AELL) is the direct service provider of ESOL and adult literacy instruction for NYPL. Professional teachers facilitate free instruction to adult patrons in reading, writing, speaking and listening from a 0 to 8th grade level in both in‑person and online classes. Instruction is offered in three 10‑week cycles and one 4‑week summer cycle.

Wakefield Library, Bronx, NY
Schedule
5 hours per week, Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:00 am–12:00 pm with 1 hour of paid prep time per week. This position works on a cycle basis (three 10‑week instructional cycles in the fall, winter, spring and one 4‑week summer cycle).
Compensation
$45.00 per hour.
Responsibilities
- Teach ESOL classes that promote English language proficiency and digital literacy for students assessed at NRS levels 1‑6.
- Follow the prescribed curriculum in a communicative language teaching environment during class time.
- Submit lesson plans that demonstrate communicative language teaching in alignment with the prescribed curriculum.
- Instruct adult ESOL students in classes and learning experiences that will lead to the achievement of their educational and personal goals.
- Assist in the managed enrollment process to recruit students and maintain student records.
- Participate in prescribed professional development pertaining to adult basic education and Library strategic priorities.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- At least 1 year of experience teaching adults in both in‑person and online settings.
- Experience creating lesson plans using a backward design approach.
- Experience administering standardized assessments.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work well both independently and collaboratively.
- Ability to meet deadlines for administrative tasks.
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office, Google Suite and Zoom.
- Knowledge of technology‑assisted learning, instructional software, video, audio and distance learning.
Physical Duties
- Lifting/moving items up to 20 lb may be required.
- Setting up and disconnecting laptop computers to projectors.
