About the Agency

Designated as a National Historic Landmark in 2016, the Mississippi State Capitol has been the seat of the State's government since 1903. It is home to the Mississippi State Legislature, whose job is to create State laws, balance the State budget, and establish State agencies. The Capitol is visited annually by thousands who come from around our state, country, and world.

Responsibilities

  • Scheduling, conducting, and confirming group tours of the Capitol; flexibility is required, as notour circumstance is exactly the same.
  • Maintaining excellent oral/written communication and coordinating with Legislators, Capitol staff, and visitors to ensure a positive tour experience for all.
  • Be available for occasional after‑hours tours and weekend events; for example, Christmas by Candlelight and Mississippi Book Festival.
  • Assisting the Director of Visitor Services with recruitment, interviewing, scheduling, training, and continued monitoring of Capitol volunteers; creating a monthly volunteer schedule to send with a newsletter, keeping track of volunteers’ hours served, ensuring that volunteers are at the Tour Desk for each guided tour time.
  • Assisting the Director of Visitor Services with recruitment, interviewing, scheduling, and training of paid interns; working with the Director to track paid hours in order to stay within fiscal year budget approved for internship by the Legislature.
  • Guided tours are offered to drop‑in tourists four times a day (with times advertised on website and print materials), and Assistant Director must be available to conduct guided tours in absence of volunteers/interns.
  • Overseeing Capitol Gift Shop: various duties including training on cashier system, relieving gift shop associates for lunch, learning inventory and management system, contacting vendors, and learning the quote approval process; be available daily to monitor the closing of the Gift Shop and to secure the bank and deliver reports – cash and credit sales – to the Senate comptroller office.
  • Recording and tracking of daily and monthly statistics related to volunteers and visitors.
  • Maintaining an organized, attractive, well‑stocked visitor desk area.
  • Serving as the Director of Visitor Services in the Director’s absence.

Qualifications

Knowledge of effective communication techniques combined with the ability to adapt to various situations while maintaining exemplary service to and interaction with visitors, colleagues, Capitol staff, and Legislators is vital to a positive job performance. Excellent skills in public speaking, writing, and organization are essential, along with the ability to navigate tour groups along hard‑surfaces floors and steps. Ability to perform administrative tasks, and computer skills including Word and Excel are necessary. The incumbent must be able to walk/stand on hard surfaces (marble floors, exterior granite steps) for extended periods of time, climb steps, lead groups, and conduct tours.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 3-4 years of experience. Agency preferred qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four‑year college/university and three years in a related field, or eight years of related experience.
