Court Reporter – 363rd Criminal District Court

Summary of Functions – Provides verbatim shorthand reporting for use in court litigation by making a record of an oral court proceeding, deposition, or proceeding before a grand jury, referee, or court commissioner using written symbols in shorthand, machine shorthand, or oral stenography.

Responsibilities

  • Attends all required court sessions.
  • Takes full shorthand notes of oral testimony, including objections to admissibility, court rulings, judge’s remarks, exceptions, exams, judicial opinions, judge’s charge to jury, closing arguments, and other proceedings using machine shorthand or reporting into a stenotype mask.
  • Reads portions of the transcript during trial as directed and clarifies inaudible statements with speakers.
  • Preserves notes for future reference and furnishes a transcript of the reported evidence or other proceedings in whole or in part as requested.
  • May conduct depositions of witnesses, receive, execute and return commissions, and certify proceedings in any county within the judicial district or as directed.
  • Reports oral testimony in contested probate matters as directed and records proceedings of other hearings and meetings.
  • Operates stenographic equipment (stenotype machine, computer‑aided transcription) and may provide light typing and clerical support as needed.
  • Gathers, indexes, binds and files court exhibits introduced during proceedings.
  • Maintains adequate office supplies and processes correspondence for distribution to appropriate personnel.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school/GED program and an accredited court reporting school.

Special Requirements / Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Certified court reporter by the Texas State Supreme Court; knowledgeable of applicable Texas codes and Texas Rules of Appellate Procedure; skilled in standard software applications; effective verbal and written communication; ability to establish and maintain working relationships with employees, departments, and the public.
