About the Role Purdue University is seeking a Facilities System Control Designer to play a critical role in the design and integration of HVAC controls and mechanical systems within our Building Automation Systems (BAS). In this position, you will independently develop and review detailed design drawings and specifications, ensuring our campus facilities operate efficiently, safely, and sustainably.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Review: Independently develop and review detailed design drawings and specifications for HVAC controls and related mechanical systems tied to BAS
Technical Support & Coordination: Provide technical support, planning, and coordination for new and existing building projects, ensuring seamless integration with campus systems
Reporting & Documentation: Develop, update, and maintain status reports and operational sequences for ongoing and completed projects
Collaboration: Work closely with Architectural and Engineering Services, Energy and Utilities, Capital Program Management, external engineering design firms, and BAS vendors to design, lay out, or detail system components and resolve design or operational issues

Ideal Candidate
Experience in HVAC controls, mechanical systems, and BAS design or integration
Strong technical skills in reviewing and developing design drawings and specifications
Excellent communication and coordination abilities to work with internal and external stakeholders

Education and Experience Needed
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field
Two (2) years of experience with heating, ventilation and air conditioning control systems in an industrial setting required
Experience with direct digital controls and pneumatics required
An equivalent combination of education and work experience will be considered as follows:
Vocational/Technical degree with 5-6 years of experience
High School Degree or High School Equivalency (HSE) with 7-8 years of experience
Skills Needed
Demonstrated ability to read and interpret mechanical prints, pneumatic control prints, and electric/electronic schematics, along with interpreting sequence of operation required
Must be able to operate, read and interpret technical materials and work under pressure during system malfunctions
Strong computer skills including knowledge of Direct Digital Control systems and the associated software are required
Familiarity with word processor and spreadsheets required
Thorough knowledge of HVAC equipment and repair required
Basic knowledge of electrical motor starters, air and water balance and electronics required
Strong organization skills and verbal and written communication skills required
