THE ROLE

Our client is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead and support their frontend (React/React Native) and QA (Cypress, Qase, Maestro) teams. Their front-end and QA developers are primarily mid-level, and need a senior- or staff-level engineering leader to guide them in both day-to-day problem-solving and long-term professional growth. You'll contribute architectural insight, unblock developers across the full stack, and ensure high standards of quality, testing, and team alignment.

*This is a hybrid role that will require on-site work 2 days per week in Chicago

WHAT YOU WILL DO Technical leadership:

Prioritize technical debt and process improvements to ensure scalability and maintainability. Provide hands-on guidance in React/React Native, testing best practices, and modern CI/CD. Collaborate closely with backend and platform teams to keep systems cohesive and integrated. Lead during incidents, coordinating response and ensuring follow-up actions stick. Team growth & culture:

Run regular 1:1s, set clear goals, and provide ongoing feedback and coaching. Invest in your team's professional development and foster an environment where engineers feel empowered to take ownership and lean into challenges. Execution & delivery:

Own timelines for multi-team efforts, balancing customer-facing features with platform improvements. Work with product, design, and engineering leads to scope work, set roadmaps, and adapt as priorities shift. Step in as the escalation point for engineering blockers and help drive pragmatic trade-off decisions. Quality & process:

Champion high standards of code quality, testing, and documentation. Drive adoption of Cypress, Qase, and Maestro for end-to-end testing, and help standardize best practices across the development lifecycle. Engage early with product and design to align technical solutions before work is handed off. AI-Driven Workflow & Delivery Acceleration:

Lead adoption of AI development copilots, automated test generation, code-review intelligence, and release risk prediction tools. Partner with Product and Design to create AI-accelerated prototyping loops-reducing iteration time between concept and customer feedback. WHAT YOU WILL LIKELY NEED

6+ years of professional engineering experience, including full-stack development. 2+ years of engineering management or tech lead experience, with a proven record of mentoring mid-level engineers. Strong expertise in React and/or React Native, with proficiency in modern JavaScript/TypeScript. Demonstrated success implementing AI-enabled developer workflows, including code generation, test automation, and CI/CD optimization. Experience with Cypress, Qase, Maestro, or equivalent end-to-end testing frameworks. Ability to context-switch between technical depth, platform strategy, and team leadership. Excellent communication and collaboration skills. NICE TO HAVES

Experience leading or coaching API or DevOps/Platform teams. Familiarity with API design or large-scale Laravel applications. Exposure to mobile CI/CD pipelines and OTA updates (React Native). Experience in startup or high-growth product environments. Working knowledge of Grafana, CloudWatch, or other observability tooling. Experience evaluating emerging tools (GitHub Copilot, Cody, internal LLM agents) to increase developer productivity.
