Job Summary

The University of North Georgia is currently accepting applications for a Writing Peer Tutors for the Gainesville campus. The purpose of writing tutoring is to assist fellow students with the mastery of concepts or applications of writing. Writing Peer Tutors integrate effective study and learning strategies, thereby maximizing each student's potential to become an independent learner and achieve academic success. As employees of the University, Writing Peer Tutors are expected to maintain ongoing communication with their supervisors. Writing Peer Tutors are also expected to be knowledgeable of and refer students to other appropriate college resources as needed. Tutoring primarily takes place in the Gainesville campus Writing Center, with possible online tutoring duties as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Tutor students online and in-person in writing and integrate study and learning strategies to promote independent learning.
  • In accordance with College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certification requirements, complete the required 10-hour tutor training in addition to at least 25 hours of actual tutoring time.
  • For each session, complete required client report forms as instructed by your supervisor.
  • Be knowledgeable of and make appropriate referrals to other campus resources; inform the supervisor of such referrals.
  • Perform other duties related to the Writing Center as assigned by supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Able to establish rapport and communicate well with students.
  • Able to break down writing concepts and deliver them in a concise and understandable way.
  • Able to use Microsoft Word.
Required Qualifications
  • Must be enrolled at the University of North Georgia in a minimum of six (6) credit hours to qualify as a student worker.
  • Must have earned a grade of B or better in English 1101 and 1102.
  • Must have and maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.3.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Writing experience across the curriculum a plus.
  • Tutoring or mentoring experience a plus.
