Library Associate (Library Experience, Part-Time)

Under general supervision, provides professional customer and information services through reference interviews, research and bibliographic instruction, technological training and assistance, and promotes the library’s collection and services. Reports to the Library Assistant Manager or Library Services Coordinator.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct reference interviews and research, developing appropriate search strategies to respond to ambiguous or complex requests, and demonstrate awareness of materials, trends and popular authors.
  • Create and maintain supplementary information files such as bibliographies and ready reference files.
  • Instruct users in the use of the library catalog, electronic resources, print and non‑print materials, and library equipment, interpreting and applying library policy and procedures.
  • Assist users with public computers and other library technology and equipment.
  • Process requests, check materials in and out, and maintain accurate circulation records.
  • Refer customers to community, state and national agencies and organizations when required.
  • Provide training to staff and volunteers on tasks and responsibilities.
  • Plan guidelines for tasks, organize projects, and perform duties in circulation, reference and public services.
  • Develop and maintain the collection, process items for rotation, and suggest purchases for the branch and system.
  • Prepare statistical and financial reports for reference, public usage, program participation, and lost inventory.
  • Plan and coordinate classes, events, and other programs and special events.
  • Analyze and assess risk factors associated with the facility and surrounding environment, including safety and security measures.
  • Secure the facility, ensuring equipment is turned off and alarms activated.
  • Modify or create bibliographic records for materials of various formats according to professional standards.
  • Assist in the daily review of new books/audio for circulation compliance.
  • Maintain and update the library catalog and collection, repairing or discarding damaged material.
  • Produce spine labels with appropriate genre, collection or award information.
  • Monitor reading and format trends to anticipate and meet patron needs.
  • Solve technical problems and implement new hardware and software to maintain computer equipment.
  • Perform related work as required.

Qualifications

  • Higher education and/or 5 years of experience, including at least 1 year in a library setting or closely related customer service field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of library routines and procedures, bookmobile operations, OPAC, and cataloging systems.
  • Understanding of bookkeeping and clerical practices.
  • Experience with data entry, typing, and operating general office equipment.
  • Proficiency in standard library methods and principles in bibliography, circulation, and reference services.
  • Ability to instruct patrons in computer programs, office machines, and library reference materials.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain statistical records and prepare clear reports.
  • Customer service orientation and ability to handle diverse patrons with courtesy.
  • Effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Knowledge of library literature for juveniles, young adults, and adults.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and workplace demands.
  • Proficiency in general office software and the ability to troubleshoot technical issues.
