Under general direction, the purpose of the position is to produce and direct live broadcasts, live web streaming events, and pre-recorded audio/video programs and content to include shooting and editing video footage as needed for the school district. Content produced includes, but is not necessarily limited to, distance learning, staff development, public relations, special events, and community information. This position also serves as a creative and technical resource for site-based staff and personnel and also supports the Superintendent and administrative staff as needed. Employees in this classification may serve in a lead capacity and possess previous training and/or experience in the industry that demonstrates a high degree of knowledge, skills and abilities. Incumbents will provide training, instruction, and guidance to team members. Performs related work as directed.

Special Note: The incumbent is considered to be “essential personnel” subject to being held over or called back to a district work location or alternate site at all times.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous and empathetic manner representing OCPS in a positive light.
  • Collaborate with district departments and staff to translate and adapt their communication objectives, initiatives, and project goals into workable, high-quality video productions.
  • Advise and coordinate with district staff in video pre‑production planning (e.g., reviewing and developing scripts, creating production schedules, attending auditions and recommending talent/spokesperson selections, delegating crew assignments, reserving equipment and facilities, designing graphics, scouting locations of field productions, determining prop and/or special wardrobe requirements).
  • Oversee production tasks (e.g., directing and coordinating crew, planning and implementing TV studio set design and lighting placement, coaching and directing on‑camera talent and voiceover announcers, conducting interviews/obtaining sound bites, selecting and acquiring production elements such as music and stock footage, providing window dub video files for shot and sound bite selection).
  • Obtain primary and B‑roll video footage through the use of 4K video cameras, DSLRs, GoPro and DJI Osmo style cameras, determining proper camera angles and setting up related equipment (tripods, lights, reflectors, microphones, etc.).
  • Conduct and direct on‑camera spokesperson interviews to obtain compelling, unscripted sound bites that communicate and support project objectives. Set up three‑point lighting and placement of lavalier and boom microphones for interviews.
  • Perform all aspects of audio‑video post‑production at an advanced level and in a timely manner, including non‑linear video editing, color grading/correction, special effects and transition inserts, text/graphics design, multi‑track audio mixing, customizing motion graphic and kinetic typography templates, still image editing and adjustment, multi‑camera editing, digital compression/encoding, file exporting, media duplication and online distribution, podcast production and editing.
  • Direct multi‑camera productions such as live cable TV broadcasts and web streaming of school board meetings, workshops and on‑location special events, acting as technical director and controlling robotic cameras, operating video switcher, monitoring audio levels, playing video inserts and performing related tasks.
  • Schedule, monitor, upload, and trim streamed meetings and videos; oversee district‑wide social media online video platform; digitally record audio‑video content for archival purposes.
  • Perform database entry duties regarding the department video library, documenting descriptions of footage and hard drive server locations for timely retrieval. Oversee digital video storage servers by regularly uploading, reviewing, deleting and organizing video files to be shared among department editors.
  • Produce and direct TV studio projects (e.g., overseeing placement of cameras, microphones, set pieces and lights; setting up chroma key, loading scripts and operating teleprompter; recording on digital media/hard drives).
  • Conduct in‑service video production classes for teachers and staff; provide specialized training to technical production staff and interns in operation of software and equipment.
  • Follow current laws and regulations regarding Copyright and Fair Use, applying a basic level understanding, to help ensure that district video productions meet legal and FCC standards, including ADA requirements regarding closed captioning of programming.
  • Attend project and regular team meetings to share and gather information required to perform functions.
  • Research and evaluate products and technologies for upgrading and determining compatibility with current production procedures; provide budgetary recommendations and justifications accordingly.
  • May need to respond to emergency situations, with prior management approval, to assist with district activities on a rare occasion (i.e., after hours and/or weekends).
  • Responsible for keeping up to date on current technology, as job appropriate, being used by OCPS. With the support of the district, attend training to ensure skill level in various technologies is at the level required to perform in the current position.
  • Responsible for timely and accurate information they maintain as part of their job responsibilities.

Qualifications

Associate’s degree from an accredited institution with emphasis in television production or related field; and three (3) years of experience as a television producer/director, to include live broadcast TV production, web streaming, and recorded productions (in studio and on location); or any equivalent combination of related education, training, and/or experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions. Vocational/technical certification in television production may substitute for up to two (2) years of the required experience. Requires the ability to obtain and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and maintain the ability to drive a district vehicle as required by the department. The incumbent is considered to be “essential personnel” subject to being held over or called back to a district work location or alternate site at all times. The following is preferred: Videography experience, directing experience of live television broadcasts/streaming productions, Final Cut Pro editing experience, familiarity with Spanish, Filemaker Pro database experience, Xsan video server experience and job experience in a public or educational environment.
