About the Role We are seeking an Design Director for Brand Design who excels at working within and expanding extensible design systems to create cohesive and impactful visual solutions across multiple parts of the Uber brand, across different mediums and platforms. This role requires a collaborative individual who can partner seamlessly with cross‑functional teams, including marketing, product, and other key stakeholders, bringing creative problem‑solving skills and a sharp design sensibility to every project. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator with a clear and compelling point of view, while remaining flexible and open to collaboration. This role will entail communicating effectively with the senior leadership across Brand, Marketing, Campaign, and Product, as well as collaborating with designers, copywriters, developers, project and marketing managers. This person should be able to think beyond a single channel execution, know how to scale designs effectively across responsive states and channel variance between print, out‑of‑home, web, email, experiential, and social, and expand the potential of design systems and template frameworks. Be prepared to lead and develop guidelines, briefings, layouts and ideas from the ground up, pitch ideas to team members, create compelling, relevant, and meaningful work, as well as be a steward for the brand with partner agencies and teams throughout Uber. As an ADD at Uber, you’ll work on multiple projects, prioritizing as needed and efficiently managing time for you and your team while receiving strategic and tactical direction from relevant stakeholders. You’ll intelligently explore the problem space with a high degree of autonomy, using the appropriate tools and levels of fidelity. Owning the design process end‑to‑end, moving from concept through to shipping and producing handoffs to support that process using channel best practices and creating accurate artifacts ready for deployment. This is both a leadership and a hands‑on role scaling appropriate as the work demands. The position requires business acumen, brand strategic thinking, team leadership and craft mentorship, project and resource management.

What the Candidate Will Do

Collaborate and ideate with multidisciplinary teams including leadership, senior stakeholders, copywriters, communication designers, illustrators, motion & animation designers, environments designers, brand strategists, marketing managers, and creative directors to build and maintain visual brand excellence for a wide range of needs

Understand and help define design briefs and requirements before completing

Manage, direct, and grow designers and agencies to meet business needs

Brainstorm and iterate with the creative team and brand leadership to help elevate and evolve design at Uber

Develop creative solutions for product, digital, and print communications where ideas can work globally, scale locally, and adapt for a variety of surfaces and use cases

Develop resources, guidelines, and templates that empower the global marketing and product teams to use illustration in impactful and resonant ways

Leads multiple project/program/platform team(s)

Questions the status quo. Identifies new strategic opportunities.

Constantly raises the bar on work quality

Solves challenges that contribute to company goals, enables operational efficiencies

Basic Qualifications

10+ years working as a Design lead on a brand team, in a creative agency or comparable in‑house agency, or creative organization

Bachelor or Masters Degree in design or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications

Maintain a portfolio of beautiful, compelling design work

Experience working on a range of projects including scalable and extensible design systems, guidelines, responsive web pages or emails, out of home or advertisements

Solid experience in all aspects of graphic design, with brand design and visual system design systems are crucial

Expertise in Figma and Adobe Creative Suite applications

Ability to design according to business and technical requirements and comfort with ambiguity and changes in direction

Experience working with or influencing brand strategy or business objectives

Bring definition to projects by focusing on broader objectives rather than fixed deliverables

Experience leading and mentoring designers and managing collaborations with external agency partners

Experience outward communication of design changes, agency briefings, and brand onboarding of teams

Experience working well with creatives as well as cross functional stakeholders, receiving feedback, and adapting work.

Fosters strong working relationships with cross functional partners

A desire to work in a fast‑paced environment, collaborating with a cross functional partners

Thrive in collaborative environments while maintaining a clear and confident point of view

Detail oriented and organized

Strong communication skills, an ability to understand your audience, and can present your work in compelling ways

Expertise in branding, style guides, experiential, and digital marketing (Email, in‑app, SMS/PUSH, paid social and display channels) best practices or proficiency using various marketing technologies

Familiarity with user experience principles

Experience scaling ideas for global deliverables

Familiarity with Google Docs and Slides

Proficiency in quickly iterating in design for customer testing

Experience with physical activations and/or environmental graphic design

Leverages AI and generative AI solutions throughout personal and design work flows

For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$186,000 per year - USD$207,000 per year. You will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
