Job Description Role Description:

The Communications Dispatcher II provides around-the-clock dispatch support to the department’s managers and supervisors, field crews, and operations personnel.

Reporting Hours & Location

This is an as-needed temporary appointment not to exceed 1,040 hours in a fiscal year.

Candidate may cover any full shift or partial shift on an as-needed basis.

May be called on short notice to work day shift (7:00 am–3:00 pm), swing shift (3:00 pm–11:00 pm), or graveyard shift (11:00 pm–7:00 am).

Location: San Francisco Water Supply and Treatment Division, 1000 El Camino Real, Millbrae, CA 94030.

Essential Duties

Operate a variety of communications equipment and transmitting devices such as multi-line telephones, keyboards, two-way radio, and pager systems to receive and transmit information.

Verify and evaluate received messages to determine accuracy, ensuring proper receipt and understanding to decide appropriate action and notify staff or agencies.

Dispatch mobile units and equipment to specific locations, including traffic control, citation, and towing services; make phone requests for ambulance, tow‑truck or other emergency services; inquire of other agencies as requested by field units; read maps and give directions to emergency locations.

Record information in the electronic system using a computer, send detailed information using a computer‑based messaging system, log daily entries, and track entry/exit of watershed by permit holders.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications

Two years of verifiable experience operating a two-way radio communications base station, receiving, recording and transmitting messages from one source to another.

OR combined total of two years of verifiable experience operating a multi-line telephone and a two-way radio communications base system. One year of this experience must have been operating a two-way radio base station.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

Desirable Qualifications

Experience working as a communications dispatcher or operator.

Knowledge in responding to emergency calls and ability to multitask and take immediate action.

Strong communication skills.

Knowledge of reading maps and conveying accurate information.

Ability to evaluate information and make sound decisions.

Responsible and able to work independently and on a team.

Strong organizational and time management skills.

Available to work with frequent flexibility such as nights, weekends, and holidays (day, swing, or graveyard shift).
