Assistant Director, Direct Marketing Solicitations (HR Title: Digital Marketing Specialist II)
Southern Methodist University seeks an Assistant Director to oversee school and unit-focused direct marketing initiatives across mail, email, social/digital, paid events, and stewardship strategies.
Responsibilities
Design, execute, and manage multi‑channel solicitation campaigns, coordinating copy, data, and assets.
Partner with the Director to create engagement copy and work with vendors to produce assets and mailings using Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Cvent, and other platforms.
Build and maintain segmented prospect lists, conduct data quality audits, and ensure proper coding of gifts and pledges.
Produce regular reports and presentations for leadership, providing insights and recommendations for optimization.
Collaborate with school/unit partners, managing relationships and aligning solicitation efforts with institutional priorities.
Support strategic development of SFMC solicitation journeys and crowdfunding initiatives.
Attend strategy sessions, data analytics meetings, and support department‑wide initiatives such as SMU Giving Day.
Occasional evening/weekend work for alumni events and SMU Giving Day.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required; Marketing, Communications, or Business preferred.
Minimum 2 years of experience in direct marketing, annual giving, or sales, with proficiency in mass email automation platforms.
Experience in higher education or nonprofit fundraising highly preferred; experience with print mail and direct marketing campaigns desired.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, especially for solicitation copy.
Excellent proofreading, editing, and attention to detail.
Proficiency in data auditing, analysis, and Salesforce Marketing Cloud (desired).
Experience with CRM systems (Blackbaud or Salesforce) and event registration software (Cvent).
Strong organizational, planning, and project management skills, Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite knowledge.
Physical and Environmental Demands
Sit for long periods, bend, handle objects, push/pull, work in confined quarters.
