The Mechanical Design Engineering Group in Accelerator Operations and Technology Division (AOT‑MDE) provides mechanical engineering support to accelerator‑technology projects and maintains the LANSCE Accelerator Facility’s mechanical systems.
The group uses SolidWorks and PDM Professional as its primary CAD platforms. We seek a highly self‑motivated Designer/Drafter who will primarily serve as a CAD System Administrator and secondarily perform design/drafting duties.
The role requires the ability to work closely with engineers and designers, communicate effectively, maintain focus over extended periods, and solve problems independently. Primary responsibilities include: Specifying computing systems based on user needs and setting up new computer hardware. Maintaining contracts for CAD licenses and installing software on individual workstations. Performing CAD system upgrades and developing/maintaining standardized CAD libraries and templates. Assisting CAD and PDM users with technical issue resolution. Supporting group projects through design and drafting tasks. Intermediate level experience with 3‑D CAD (SolidWorks or CREO) and PDM software. Intermediate understanding of modeling and drafting principles, standards, symbols, notes, GD&T, and drawing/Modeling best practices. Intermediate knowledge of engineering, design, and drafting concepts in mechanical and electro‑mechanical disciplines. Intermediate familiarity with ASME, ANSI, AWS, and related industry standards. Intermediate level use of drafting practices per ASME Y14.5, incorporating GD&T into designs. Effective oral and written communication with scientists, engineers, machinists, and fabrication personnel. Education / Experience
Position requires an Associate’s Degree in an Engineering or Technical field and three (3) years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Desired Qualifications
Experience setting up new computer hardware, printers, scanners, plotters, etc. Installation, deployment, configuration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and updates of software. Technical support and assistance to end‑users, resolving system and software issues. Knowledge of hardware specifications (CPUs, GPUs) for computing systems. Experience performing data backups and system recoveries. Familiarity with installing and configuring SolidWorks, PDM Professional, NX CAD, and ANSYS Simulation Software. Ability to create and maintain CAD standards (templates, folder structures, file‑naming conventions, library components). Essential Job Functions
Peripheral vision, depth perception, reading vision, distance vision, ability to discriminate speech, hearing in the normal range (500 to 3000 Hz), sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs/ladders, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, twisting the trunk or back, reaching overhead/horizontally/down, applying torque with hands or arms, lifting 30+ pounds. The work location is onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management. Position Commitment
