recruitment to fill future full-time vacancies in the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO). Only applicants currently working in the WCSO in the classified service for at least six months are eligible to apply. Unclassified Deputy Sheriff Appointees are not eligible for this promotional exam. Note: The current list for Sergeant will remain in effect until a new list is established from this recruitment. The appointing authority has the right to select any eligible candidate from the qualifying list based on Merit principles and the operational needs of the agency. Four years of full-time paid public law enforcement experience, including three years as a Deputy Sheriff with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO).

License Or Certificate

A valid driver’s license is required at the time of application and for continued employment in this classification.

Possession of a Nevada Intermediate P.O.S.T. Certificate is required at the time of application.

Maintain Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate as Category I Police Officer per NRS/NAC 289.

Complete P.O.S.T continuing education requirements in accordance with NRS/NAC 289.

Successful completion of the Detention Training Program is required at the time of application.

Be Patrol Certified as defined in WCSO Policies and Procedures at the time of application for assignments in Operations.

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Supervisory Deputies Association (WCSSDA) Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) covers the Sergeant position.

Washoe County requires its employees to reside in Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee, South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work.

Upon promotion, current Washoe County employees are placed at the minimum rate of the salary range for the higher classification of the new position OR a promotional calculation, whichever is greater.

Selection Process and Exam Information

After your application is screened, you will be notified via the email provided whether you meet the minimum requirements. Those who do not meet qualifications have one (1) business day to file an appeal.

If you meet the minimum requirements, you will receive an email inviting you to schedule the

exam. If you do not receive an invitation within five (5) days of the scheduled exam date, contact careers@washoecounty.gov. You will receive initial confirmation after selecting an exam date and time, and a follow-up email with examination details.

Part I

— The Sergeant exam is tentatively on January 5, 2026. The exact time will be sent with the invitation. There are NO make-up exams. The exam is administered in Reno, NV and is multiple choice.

Candidates must pass the written exam to participate in the Assessment Center.

Part II

— The Sergeant Assessment Center is tentatively scheduled for the week of January 26, 2026. It will include a variety of assessment exercises to evaluate essential entry-level knowledge, skills, and abilities for success as a Sergeant with the WCSO.

After the exam, you will receive your score and rank by email. Scores weigh 40% written exam and 60% Assessment Center.

Examination Materials The recommended study material for the 2026 Sergeant testing process is available in the N drive, labeled “2026 Sgt Test Study Material.” Candidates are responsible for knowledge of forms, information and current trends pertinent to the Sergeant role.

The study materials include: Washoe County policies, contracts, NRS/NAC chapters, WCSO core policies, detention SOPs, and other related training resources.
